    True, but I think a newbie was asking what to do when no dip belt available.

    A better description is that dumbbell is just below my knees and sandwiched between my calves; it is sort of hanging from my upper calves. I can get on the dip stand with the weight on, but I can't get off, so I dip down and basically drop the weight a little ways to the rubber floor. Dropping 100 lbs wold probably be frowned upon and make a racket.

    Damn, if and when I get to 80-100 pound dips for 10 reps I'll take a video and brag about it and pound my chest! lol

    Do It!!! and just get yourself a belt... you wont regret it... good for chins AND Dips and they should be fairly cheap too.

    Why that question? Use what is appropriate for you and work up from there. If you can handle >10 reps with good form then consider adding some weight. How much? Well think about adding 10% more than your BW and shoot for the same number of reps. Set and rep scheme is up to you. GL

    But I have gotten up to 2x BW dips. I havent pushed it past that lately.

    Dips are amazing. I just started to do them again and man my chest sure feels them! Great excercise. The idea of them being the squat of upper body is a great way to describe it.

    What are you using?
    My best was 135 pounds added for 7 reps at around 145 to 150 pounds body weight.. I hurt something in my left pec/shoulder/trap tie-in area though not to long after doing that and have laid off going that heavy since then.
    Weighted pullups = 195 lbs x1
    Weighted dips = 225 lbs x2
    Squat = 405 x2

    I always do 4 sets of weighted bench dips, but I hardy feel my triceps. I feel it for the most part in my shoulders. How can I hit my triceps more with bench dips? My hands are always very close to my body.

    Im going to assume that your only chest exercise is not dips, but its worth clarifying that the stress needed to fully develop a chest, needs to be with a variety of exercises and with successively heavy weights.

    Really good exercise, but i can't do them anymore, because when i use the appropriate weight for about 8 reps, it strains my right hand too much, and feels like I'm going to burst a vain or something. Anyone else had this problem?

    Good article!!! Recently I started dipping and just got myself a dipping belt as well. Not many interested in dip, and most of them doing it wrongly which can be hurtful. Dip is one of my routines for warming up (of course not weighted, unless I dedicate that particular day for free and easy free weight training )

    nice read and solid advise. i started with assisted dips (good idea for learning correct form) 3~4 sets til failure once a week and within a few weeks i was doing unassisted! now im finally weighted and it feels beast! theres just something gnarly about hanging weights off of yourself...
