Hi
I've been on Keto Diet (CKD) for 4 days now and feel dreadful. Since starting I've felt bloated, tired, bad nausea, headache and just generally pretty awful.
Is this normal? If so how long does the nausea and lethagy last for? I was told 4 days max and this is my 4th day and if anything I feel worse, plus I haven't lost any weight (put on 1lb!).
Cheers guys

It's been 4 days.
At this point, any significant drop on the scale would be water weight at most.
Anytime you drastically change your eating there is going to be a period of adjustment in which you body is going "why the **** did you mess with ****???". Getting into ketosis for the first time is no exception.
If it's really that bad just eat some damn carbos.

First week can suck, headache, foggy feeling. A Diet Coke usually gets me past that, and once week 2 hits I feel awesome. I suggest at least 2 weeks of minimal carbs (greens and other fiber only) before even attempting a carb up.

65% fat, 30% protein, 5% carbs = keto.

Carbohydrates are protein sparring so no keto does not spare muscle, in fact its quite the opposite.

Thanks for replies. I plateaued on my usual diet for almost 4 months. Currently 155lbs 5ft 7 with 17% BF. I've been down as low as 144lbs but still BF remained at 17% which I presume was a result of to few calories and loss of lean muscle. Keto was suggested by a friend who uses Keto to cut down for competition and hold on to muscle mass. He believes it's the best method of cutting and maintaining.

Here is an excellent read regarding carbohydrate requirements for strength aesthetes. He speaks to the muscle sparing qualities of dietary carbohydrates as well as gives some minimum recommendations.

Some people just don't do well on keto diets. I for one don't. I never have any energy for workouts and feel like utter crap all day. I have to have at least 100g of carbs daily or I feel terrible. 100 grams is still low enough that the fat comes off quickly. But 4 days isn't very long. Maybe give it a week or so.

You're probably having sugar withdrawal. Also, are you drinking enough water? Keto diets are very dehydrating and require you drink more water. Dehydration could account for some of those symptoms as well.

BF is being tested by bioelectrical impedance analysis. I was tested by the strength and conditioning coach of our national rugby team so should be pretty accurate. Just can't seem to get diet right to get below 17% so trying Keto out of frustration more than anything else! I know I'm only very early in but don't think it suits me, not even enough energy to get to the gym today! Think I'll be having se

I would not recommend a low fat diet to my worst enemy. I am guessing he was showing the hormonal and vitamin issues that come with low fat diets. IMHO when I cut, the deficit comes from carbs since cutting fat/protein is not an option. You can easily avoid ketosis and keep a sizable deficit while eating all 3 macro nutrient minimums.

I did it for three weeks.
The first week, I felt God awful, absolutely terrible headaches, felt constantly dehydrated (drank a lot too) and often a little down/depressed (I put that down to sugar withdrawal).
The second week, I felt energetic, lively and alert. However, I tended to crash at around 5pm most nights, needing a meal.
The third week, I felt normal. Towards the end though, I started to feel bad. I was glad I got through it though, it was an experience.
Never again. Not worth the feeling of warmed up death.

I love keto simply because the food types suit my eastern european culture better then oats/broccoli/ chicken breast,
feeling full for longer, using fat stores as energy, and improved focus.
Also i find it impossible to cheat on keto (for me anyways) as in on a normal carb diet, i have the mentality that a bit of carb from a suger source is okay, then it turns into a binge, on keto its almost like have a mini voice in your head that says dont break ketosis! (but this benefit is unique to me and probably useless to others)
