I use some nike shoes made for running(like trail running), but at $90 or so their not cheap. They last forever and a month though.

I would advise you to get a shoe that will fit your foot the best. There are plenty of styles to choose from but the main thing to look for is one that has the proper width and arch height. I have always bought the Asics brand running shoe. They are midweight and they have more width in the toe. Also the arch is just about right for me. anywhere from 40-65 bucks at Academy. Just try on a bunch and see what your feet like the best. Your whole body will thank you.

Chuck taylors. Most sneakers are way too cushiony. You could also use standard dress shoes, but you would look funny in the gym.

I've been using squishy running shoes, which I know are suboptimal for lifting, especially squats. Yesterday I bit the bullet and ordered a pair of Rogue Fitness weightlifting shoes. Pricy at $119, but should last a long time, since I will only wear them in the gym. I hate ordering shoes because I seldom get the correct size and wind up having to send them back for exchange. Hopefully I'll get lucky this time. I'll report back after I've used them a couple of times.

It depnds on what you do, Oly lift, Powerlift or just weight lift.
Anything you Overhead press, squat, pull or deadlift you want a solid flat bottom sneaker with no soft or air cushion and Chuck Taylor's are the best for the cheapest price.
    Else anything you want.
Oly Lifters will spend a lot of money for some powerlifting shoes with raised heels and sloid botoms but these cost a lot and really good ones cost well over 100.
Power lifters use Chucks mostly but I use 3 different type, one for squats (Oly powerlifting shoes), regular sneakers niki or addidas for bench and Otomix for deadlifts.
Alot depends on what you do, serious lifters will pay a lot else get Chucks, or if you don't squat and deadlift use anything.
    Good Luck!

My personal favorite a Asics wrestling shoes with a canvas and nylon upper. Cheap and durable...had them for two years.

Ummm if you're working out at home on carpet why not try working out without shoes?

EDIT: If you still want to buy shoes I would recommend you buy a pair that you feel comfortable wearing. I have 2 pairs of workout shoes myself: a pair of Vibrams for squats/DLs and a pair of Asics running shoes for everything else (albeit I'm lazy at times and just wear my Vibrams for my complete leg day). Personally I can't workout in Chuck Taylor's because I find them just plain ugly (Vibrams aren't that appealing either but not as bad as the Taylor's). The difference between the Taylor's and Vibrams were $25 which was well worth the investment of me not having to look at Taylor's while working out. I was actually looking for Merrill barefoot shoes before the Vibrams but couldn't find any in my area and they were too expensive online.

I work out in a public gym, When I squat or deadlift I just kick my trainers off and do it in my socks. I've had some strange looks but no-one has ever questioned it. Its not a fashion show I'm there to work out and don't really care what anyone thinks.

I go to shoe station and poke around on the clearance isle. I typically buy running shoes for half price (old model). Takes an hour or so, but I get out for $40.

Make sure you get the RIGHT shoe for your workout. I'm fairly loyal to Asics.

I got some Adidas wrestling shoes for under $40 and have lasted me over a year now and still in great shape. I only where them in the gym never outside so I expect they'll last me for quite some time. Basically like wearing socks with extra traction.

I lifted barefoot until I got some Vibram FiveFingers. Now I have a pair of FiveFingers that I lift in, and one pair I just wear pretty much everywhere.

I am not into styling in the gym....but I wear Chucks for Squats, deads, rows, etc. I feel cross trainers or running show seriously screw up my form due to the heel . I user Asic Kayano for bench (best traction, higher heel, therefore better leg support) or just about any good running shoe.

Yeah, most cross trainers sucks for squats and deads. I used to wear chucks for squatting, but lately I just squat barefoot too, it's just easier and then I don't have to worry about finding size 16 shoes. But I wear rock climbing shoes for pulling trucks.

Another vote for chucks. You can go to Payless or one of the chinamarts (no racist) to get 'em cheap.
