Irene has sacrificed some of her wind speed (thus being downgraded to cat 1) but has grown larger and is moving slower. As such, they're indicating that the potential for damage may still be representative of a category 4 hurricane.
My parents live in a flood zone so I'm hoping that it won't be as bad as they're saying. They've boarded up their windows for the first time in their lives. At the same time I'd be pissed if, after all this hype, it turns out to be just a bad rainstorm.

Prepare for the worst, hope for the best pretty much. There have been hurricanes where tons of people died simply because nobody took it seriously, so I'm taking it serious considering I'm pretty damn close to the shore (Jersey Shore) but I'm not freaking out by any means.
If there are tornadoes around my house though I will sh*t bricks.

i honestly think you will be okay!
while i do think most people are over-reacting I do live right of the ocean by lbi so i am a bit nervous and am taking the necessary precautions just in just things do turn for the worst!
but to be honest i am looking forward to taking my jeep out later to see how the surge will be hitting the coast in a couple of hours!just your average unicyclist, juggling, trombone playing weightlifter.......

Category 1 is nothing (I was in Ike a couple years back which was a category 4). Easy checklist:
1) tape your windows
2) buy candles, lighters, batteries, a couple gallons of drinking water
3) stock up a couple days worth of dry goods, and extra whey powder.
Do the above and you are good, make sure you have some training equipment at home in case the power is out a day or two, to keep you entertained and to stay in shape, and a couple decent novels to read.

It's typical scare tactics + slow news day.
brb buying a gun, canned food, red colored life vest with blinking lights and flares on it so that my beloved government and FEMA can "save me" from 20 feet of water, and of course bowflex, since gym will be closed for 2 weeks and I will go catabolic!

That sounds like a good idea ^^^
You could probably let the hookers live in your basement and pay them for sex in canned food (1 can per day, cat food of course, cheaper) because "Irene" will annihilate the civilization as we know it, and only FEMA is our last hope as people sheet themselves in sports arenas and stadiums while waiting to be "saved". Even Dorothy and Toto are scared right now {insert another eye roll here}
Late breaking news! Winds for the next 2 days and nights are 10-30 mph... brb sheeting my pants because "Irene" is coming.

It initially looked more serious. Some scientists are starting to have doubts though.
http://stevengoddard.wordpress.com/2...-33-mph-winds/
"NOAA claims the winds are 85 MPH, but none of the Weather Underground stations in the area report higher than 33 MPH winds. By definition, this is not a hurricane – and is just barely a tropical storm."
Let's hope this guy is right.

They're also supposed to be closing rte 15. ::shrugs:: I already called out of work for tomorrow, but I don't really expect there to be any extreme damage. Probs just some flooding and some downed trees. That article makes me feel better for not preparing for this like its a zombie apocalypse.
