I'm going on 16 here in a couple weeks and I was wondering if melatonin was safe for teenagers. I've looked it up, but found many mixed reviews. Some people said don't take it at all and other said to take up to 10mg. Most supplements of it here contained 3mg but it said you could break the pill and take less. So is melatonin safe for a teen, and if so how much?I just want something to take maybe 2-3 times a week when I'm having trouble sleeping, and the stuff is dirt cheap! Thanks for any help!!!

I take 3 MG's and that is all you need. I don't see why take 10 MG of melatonin and maybe that much is not good but 1-3 MG can't hurt you. I tend to take it for a few weeks straight then give my body a week off of it though so it doesn't depend on it.

Yes it's safe. I myself take 3 mgs at night, helps support deep sleep, but won't knock you out if you have insomnia. No side effects except maybe grogginess if you take too much, and I believe you build a tolerance to it if you take it too often. I take it about every other day. It also is an anti-oxidant and may reduce estrogen in the body.

From what I've heard/read here and there it's not great to use constantly, but it can be helpful when needed. Start out small as well. Many people jump right to the 3mg pills (as those seem to be the most common) when sometimes .5mg is all you will need. I personally have the 3 mg optimum ones from here (they are a few bucks for 100) and just cut them in half when I need a little help sleeping. Works great for me. I noticed when I was using it at higher doses 3 - 6 mg for a week or so long I would have really vivid dreams and then wake up about 4 hours after taking it wide awake. Sucked.
