6 months....detached retina....post-op SUCKS, you essentially have to lay with your head down (face perpendicular to the floor) for a MONTH. Then, I ended up having to have ANOTHER surgery after 6 weeks. Then, FOUR laser surgeries (not nearly as bad.)
Had to avoid the gym forever b/c when you lift heavy your intra-ocular pressure skyrockets, and increased pressure is one of the main concerns.
Worst thing I ever had to do....made the best of it...but it sucked no doubt...saved my sight in right eye though.
I've taken a month off a few times for big board exams (grad school.) I know most people just lift right through that **** and it helps them manage stress. But, I just go into full-study mode, come straight home from school...eat...short relax...study 2-3 hours. I totally eliminated gym (lifting, not cardio) TWICE for a month before a big board exam. Running was still good with me though.

herniated disc in november made me take a week off any lifting, and then afterwards i lifted only certain bodyparts at much lighter weights, but ive been in the gym every week since usually 5 days a week. still cant squat or deadlift or barbell row however many months later, but i can do pretty much anything else, hurts to bend over still too
