Tape em if you need to or is that against regulations?

Tape is fine in most places.
I would save taping until you get 3+ plates and leave a courtesy tab so you can get the tape off. With that many reps, if you use tape, be prepared to replace it once or even twice.
Chalk everything and really chalk the entire thumb.
In time, your hands will get used to it. Friday, I pulled trap and a couple of singles at 515, no chalk, no nothing. It really makes a grip difference for me using the hook.

I decided against tape...I just let them bleed for the first 2-3 sessions until they calloused up and I'm good to go now.
Merely a flesh wound....
I sweat like crazy so I always have my hands in front of the fan, chalk like crazy and hit it.
It makes it pretty easy that your programming for deads is mostly singles anyway.

I think hook grip is the way to go. I had my best increases in deadlift strenght while I was hook gripping..plus to bystanders it looks pretty badass to doh grip 4 + plates Since I swithed back to alternating grip, progression has stalled...form also went to shyt.
nice work though, your presses have gone through the roof!My 5/3/1 progress can be found here.

231? wtf?
I laugh at stuff sometimes. And only because I've been there. I have seen some of the craziest stuff in the gym and on the platform and, when I traveled as a musician, the crazy stuff was off the chart.

You should know that when I started 2-3 years ago, 185 was a working set for squats...I started training in April and competed as a novice the following January. Looking back I should've remained in the novice division but was unaware that you could compete as a novice more than once.
