Running too much will make you gain weight

Me and my friend got in a pretty big debate last night over this. The words out of his mouth were "Running too much will make you gain weight", and i said that sounds absolutely retarded and doesn't even make sense. It is just so illogical, how is burning more energy gonna make you gain weight? Just to try to explain to this peasant i said "That explains why there are so many fat marathon runners" and that if that was the case "Starving people in east africa should just start running cause their bodies will magically start gaining weight and they can live forever"

His arguments, "The number one trainer in the city told me this" and "I am more jacked than you"...he is a lot more jacked than me but clearly also dumber lol (jokes)(but very srs)

What are your thought on this bros?

my g/f's trainer told her this. *She goes 3x/week and her trainer noticed her legs were getting bigger. *She told me her jeans were getting tighter around her thighs too. *The trainer asked what's up? *She told her that she had been running with me about 3-4 times a week. *The trainer told her that it was making her legs bigger/fatter.

I told my g/f that that was stupid. *perhaps her legs were getting*swollen*from running, but not fat in a negative way. *regardless, they got bigger, so she quit running and her legs slimmed down. * I think she may be*genetically*inclined to gain leg muscle. *She gained muscle before losing fat. *I dunno.

I know, but I am a retard so I continue the argument. I just need to recognize a lost cause when i see one. Now he's on to a new argument, last night he said "Body fat percentage is the ratio of fat to muscle" and i was like i am not sure. I looked it up today and told him that was incorrect, his argument....

"It is can be interpreted like that cause fat and muscle make up the majority of your weight"

    my rebuttal

"Facts arent to be interpreted, they are facts. And you were factually incorrect. And bones make up 15% of your weight, so someone like bruce lee, his bone would be a larger percentage of his weight than his body fat"

I really can't see how this can even be argued...So fuarking obivous

Its true. It causes the body to use calories more efficiently and store more fat when available.

Running makes you disproportionately hungry compared to how much calories you burned off.*

Explains why whales jog on the treadmill for like 30 mins, then go eat a tub of ice cream.*

Running too much can change your body composition for the worse if your diet is awful, but it won't make you gain weight.

You also have to consider different hormonal responses to the type of training done. Hormones such as cortisol can trigger one's body to conserve energy and store fat. It is a stress response. Testosterone helps prevent the storage or fat, and triggers the growth of lean mass.

Running, as a mere expenditure of energy would not cause any weight gain, after the initial glycogen increasing weight gain. Eating a disproportional amount of calories to those burned while running would cause an increase in weight. Running for ridiculous amount of time, without proper eating habits can cause a metabolic slowdown, just like lifting can. This can make weight hard to lose, but not cause you to gain.

Gaining and losing weight has everything to do with the amount of calories that you eat, versus the amount that you expend. This is the simple, cold-hard, truth.

Repped...this is legit word for word what i said. It's just sad that me, who doesn't work out (what did you expect im a miscer) is the one saying this, and a personal trainer is arguing this....

It CAN. For example, if you run hard, you might burn 400-500 calories, but it also stimulates your appetite hard. If the average person runs hard once in a while and simultaneously disregards his/her diet, then their post-run meal can EASILY be 500+ calories. If you are exhausted and starving after a hard run and you don't give a rat's ass about diet, then a piece of cake alone will be 500, plus whatever else junk you can find. Do this 3 times a week and bam, weight gain.
