How Much Fat is Too Much Fat?

    Hey everyone,

Like most my questions i ask, they are generally stupid so i am grateful for everyone's patience. I was wondering how much fat is too much? I have 200 grams (half a tub) of natural peanut butter a day. My mum thinks it's too much fat and I'm going to die from it or something. Is that fat really that bad or am I fine?

    Thanks!

The consumption of dietary fat will not make you fat, unless it ends up putting you at a large caloric surplus. However, I would also say that it's important to vary your sources of dietary fat in order to receive the benefits of each type of fatty acid. That being said, it's wise to avoid synthetic trans-fat because research shows that such fatty acids are*detrimental*to your overall health.

Thanks, I'm probably around 14% bodyfat, maybe even a little lower and have been eating this much fat for over 6 months so it's not putting me at a huge calorie surplus. What's trans-fat though sorry? I get 'most' my fats from milk and natural peanut butter.

From what I understand, synthetic trans-fats are a type of fatty acid known to raise LDL cholesterol and lower HDL cholesterol. Normally, you would want it the other way around.

Usually, you can avoid synthetic trans-fats by simply looking at the nutritional facts and then proceeding down to look at the ingredients. If you see something like "hydrogenated vegetable oil" in the ingredients, that's a clear indication to avoid the consumption of that food.

However, natural trans-fat, the kind found in animal products like ground beef, have been shown to not cause the deterimental effects of synthetic trans-fat. So therefore, that's why I advise for you to look at the*nutritional*facts first, to see if there are any trans-fat, and then proceeding down to look at the ingredients, to determine if the trans-fat in the food is actually synthetic or natural.

An example can be found in McDonald's hamburgers. If you look at the nutritional facts, it will state that it has some trans-fat in the burgers. However, if you proceed to look at the ingredients, the burgers themselves are made out of 100% USDA-grade beef. So therefore, the trans-fat is natural, and thus, it is safe to consume the burger.

Here's a study on trans-fat and how it metabolizes in the body, if you were interested in reading about it:

Also edited my post...looks like I messed up my wording a little bit. I meant to say that the consumption of dietary fat will not make you fat, unless said consumption exceeds your caloric intake.

As everyone has stated dietary fats do not make you fat. Over eating calories make you fat.
Best advice I can give you from what I have learned is cut out all empty calorie sources.
You will feel fuller and more alert that way.
Though others might suggest you eat more empty calories... soda, syrup, candy...

Now on the fact of peanut butter. It's high in Omega 6 fatty acids which cause inflammation.
To counter that you should eat more spices. Such as peppers, garlic, onion, cinnamon...
Don't freak out and think omg omg inflammation going to die.. It simply means you will be shi... a lot.

As the guys above said avoid the oils with transfattyacids.
A good thing to do is throw away all vegetable oils and all vegetable oil made butter.
Go with cow milk made butter and go with olive oil, nut oils, and coconut oil.
For cooking I have found olive oil is best for my taste.
For drinking mixed with other items I found coconut oil to be best.
Macadamia nut oil works great with cakes, cookies, ice cream, etc.

While it's important to limit empty calorie sources, I don't believe the best thing to do is to just cut out all of those sources. If he feels that he wants to eat some ice cream, then let him. The problem comes when ice cream becomes a large majority of his caloric intake and displaces whole food consumption.

You're eating "too much" fat if it's impeding on protein and carb requirements. That is all.

Carbs are important if you are not eating enough protein.
Say for instance you go on an all fat/protein diet.
You would need more protein then if you were on a carb/fat/pro diet.

So in other words if my essential macros are deficient, my non-essential macros are more important? *I don't think this translates to a "carb requirement." *Also, there's nothing in the OP about a carb-free diet.

Yes, from a daily functioning or performance standpoint

Unless of course they're on a LCD...in which case its only too much if its impeding on protein intake.

Thanks for everyones replies, I appreciate it! I was not wondering if it's too much fat in terms of diet, i was just wondering whether it would affect my health. I do have the required amount of carbs and protein. I eat approximately 5,000 calories a day, so 1,300 calories of PB still gives me plenty of other food to get calories from. Having the PB is a quick way to get a lot of calories for me since i make a shake in the morning before work with peanut butter, oats, protein etc so i can quickly drink it and leave home in minimal time. Then i have a second one of those shakes as soon as i get home. So i have 100 grams of peanut butter in each, totalling 200grams. We can only buy 400grams of natural peanut butter in tubs here so yeah that's half a tub i eat a day.
