a pound of fat is 3500 calories. 30-50lbs means you need to eat 105000-175000 calories less than your burn doing everyday activities over the 6 months so about 960 calorie deficit per day. this is a general estimate & is good as the first iteration.
training is good for general health but does not weigh into your question. type of workout program, or selection of exercises is irrelevant."Though the concept is not scientifically validated in detail (it should be considered as a hypothesis rather than a scientific theory), it is useful from a practical standpoint. When training athletes, it is impossible to wait until scientific research provides all of the necessary knowledge." Vladmir M. Zatsiorsky, Ph.D.

This has very little to do with your workout routine and everything to do with nutrition. Pop into the Nutrition Stickies and read through. I lift the same whether I'm cutting or bulking.

any decent/basic weightlifting routine will do, so long as you stay consistent. as far a losing fat goes, it will have more to do with diet than anything. HITT workouts and endurance / circuit training / cardio workouts will be most beneficial in burning fat though, IMHO.
I use to have a major weight problem, the key is to just stay focused, keep pushing hard, and knowing that you can do it.
