How Long Does Shooting Most Movies Take?

I know it depends on the movie, but lets say blockbuster ones, like Transformers 3 or Captain America...

Do movies even take a year to shoot sometimes?

It depends a lot on how you want to count it. An effects-heavy and high-action movie like Captain America is likely to take 60-100 days of shooting. You can easily spend several days on just one action sequence.

Lower-budget and indie movies are more typically 20-40 shooting days, depending on the genre, budget, style, and all sorts of other factors. Something else to think of is that for dramas and other "talking heads" movies, you might get away with a "shooting ratio" of 4:1 (you shoot 4 minutes of raw footage for each minute of running time in the movie). For action films, you're almost always going to have a shooting ratio of at least 10:1 to 15:1.

High-budget movies have to stick to shorter workdays instead of the 12-16+ hour days typical of indies (so that's another reason an indie can be shot in fewer days).

You also have to think that big CGI movies (especially transformers) go through AT LEAST 6 months of post-production to get all the CGI, editing and sound work finished. Before that you have several months of shooting, and then perhaps over a year of pre-production depending on how fast things are rushed.

The turnaround for big budget movies I'd say is between 2 and 3 years. Some can go on for longer (Avatar...), some will be quicker.

about 3 months +/- a month. editing takes much longer. most summer blockbusters shoot the previous summer and the rest of the year leading up to the release is spent editing

lol, movies do not take that long to film.

a 30min tv show only takes a few days to shoot. A movie would take a few months since there is more involved especially if using several dif. locations

Actors are not going to need to be there every day. The great majority of the time, they'll only be scheduled for one or a few blocks of shooting days, so they may come out one week, be off for a couple of weeks and then come by for a few days near the end (just as an example).

Movies are not shot in the order you watch them, the schedule is based on making the best use of actors, locations, sets, etc. You can do lots of tricks to make better use of actors and schedules. For example, what you might think is one "location" may not be: two "sides" of a room may be in different states and shot at different times so the shots showing one actor are filmed looking over the shoulder of a stand-in with a similar hairstyle--so two people having a conversation in the movie may have never met in person.

    Yes.

The budget aka money plays a crucial role in any project.
