Are you a Gym Lifter
By Adam “Hulk” Hires
I was having a conversation with a friend and fellow lifter, and I told him that he was “gym lifter.” You may think that was harsh, but I believe to help someone, you have to be honest. But what did I mean by that? You may know the answer. Even if you do, you could be one yourself. A few years back, I was. Evidence that you are a “gym lifter” might include some or all the following:
1) You have no direction.
You can tell when someone is, by just asking them a few questions. Ask them their goals, when they are competing, what training system they use, etc. You get the point.
2) Don’t have indicators.
They will aimlessly do a myriad of movements, not knowing the carryover, purpose or practicality of it. They have no real way of tracking their progress. They “always have a good session.”
3) Nothing is done to meet standards.
We have all seen the person that constantly cuts their squats WAY high or never touching, just to break gym PR’s.
4) You live in the moment.
You will do anything to break that gym pr, no matter where you are in a training cycle. “I have a meet in 4 weeks,” never enters your mind.
5) Constant bombing
What do you get for all your “hard work?” BOMBS! Big mystery!
What to do if you are a “gym lifter?” Kind of like Mapquest, reverse the directions. It might take you a second, but you will figure it out. Ways I keep myself in check:
1) Vids
If I can’t post it, it probably looked like crap! My lifts are clean but even then, I break my lifts down until I hate them.
2) Ask someone that I trust.
I want them to jump my ass if I am not doing things right.
3) Keep gym PR’s in perspective.
Basically I know they are means to an end.
4) Only pick a few times in a meet cycle to go all out.
Just keep the ammonia sessions to a minimal.
5) I have an understanding; everything will pay off if, and only if I do it the right way in the gym.
I am not one of those that will ever say that gym lifts don’t matter. They do matter or we wouldn’t do them. However, meet totals are your proof!
Adam “Hulk” Hires is the currently number one ranked raw 242lbs powerlifter in the PowerliftingWatch.com top 50 242lbs raw powerlifting rankings with a 1930lbs total.
