    Losing fat is UNHEALTHY! STOP RIGHT NOW!

    So, I told my GF how I'm losing weight by counting calories and explained the very basic concept of cals in vs out. She said her diet was terrible and she would never be able to eat "clean" and I told her that she doesn't need to, just eat smart, and I told her the day after I was planning on getting 3 Tendergrills from BK (thanks yepimonfire) and would still lose weight just fine.

    Next day comes around and I'm describing to her in detail how I managed to remove the tomatoes from the burgers without much effort and she tells me I shouldn't be doing this cals in vs out thing, it's not healthy. She talked to a friend who is about to graduate college to be a doc (not sure what kind) and she said I'm going to die before I reach 30. When my gf told her I'm down 67lbs she said "tell him to stop NOW and go to a doctor before he dies!".

    That's it guys, 2nd doc-to-be that tells me I'm going to die cause I count calories and eat burgers. Everyone of you should stop losing weight by counting calories, grab a carrot and a few 2000kcals salad from BK so you don't get fat.

    I would love an explanation on why doctors don't know the basics of weight loss... Why is it believed that the only way to lose weight is eating plant?

    Prereqs for med school are things like biology and chemistry, which have a lot more to do with DNA, chemical reactions, evolution, etc than nutrition. While cals in vs. cals out was sort of common sense to me for a long time, things like how my macros should be set up, etc. were all foreign to me until I came on this forum. Even after a year of medical school, it's clear that the system was never designed to teach us how to give good nutritional advice. The sad thing is, many nutritionists aren't much better, either. =/

    We we're all in that boat once. I, too, believed I would never lose weight unless I ate "clean".

    hours of nutrition

    Does anyone actually know how many hours of nutritional studies a doctor will put in over their course? As far as I believe also from what I have read only around 30% of medical schools in the U.S require a separate nutrition course. The average student receives around 24 hours of contact nutrition instruction. Definitely believe there are a few members on here more qualified than that to be giving proper nutrition/diet advice?

    Maybe they have the idea you're eating nothing but burgers or something? Which, while you could lose weight, would be unhealthy since you're lacking in fiber and all those veggie-vitamins. But yeah, calorie counting is a fundamental principle.

    There are a lot of people who graduated college and are about to be xyz (or think they're going to be xzy) who are absolute retards. I know several doctors who I'd never take dietary advice from.

    Not to derail, but I just checked the nutrition on these: Dear God! I just added it to my calorie-counting app on my phone - with bacon, pepperjack cheese and onion added. (Superhandy, customizing nutrition interface at BK's site - very cool.)

    I think I've just planned my next post-workout meal - two days in advance.

    Nick, I don't understand the part about removing tomatoes with out much effort?

    In general response, I don't tell people about it. I've found if I tell someone that I had something known to contain dietary fat, a lecture follows. You obviously cannot consume fat and lose fat. It's impossible. Any fat makes you fat.

    I mean I used to have similar lines of thinking, so I get it. But at the same time, unless someone is talking to me about wanting to lose weight, it's not worth the effort to explain it in detail to them, only for them to spew years of brain washed broscience at me.

    I'm not sure if it's lack of knowledge regarding weight loss, or just absolutely giving up on the patients.

    Imagine day after day you see patients that say "They've done everything to lose weight" Now you've tried telling people to measure & weigh food, but they always swear they are. At some point you're just gonna say F*ck it! I'll tell them to eat lots of veggies and hopefully that will fill them up so they don't have room for deep fried Twinkies.

    I had this discussion with a guy last week. He swears his weight and lipid issues are genetic. Why? Because his dad is fat also. The doctor came to this conclusion by asking "does your dad have similar issues?", but no analysis of their eating and exercise habits.

    I proposed he try weighing and measuring his food, so he can really understand what he's eating. But, he quickly said it's too time consuming and difficult. A doctor is better off giving other advice, because that fact is 90% or more of people aren't going to spend an extra 5-10 minutes a day to track what they eat.

    Not every medical student is going to know basic nutrition in awesome detail, some do and some don't, they are more interested in sickness. Having a bit of fat and not having 6pack abs is not "being sick". We have specific goals (fat loss, muscle gain) which CAN BE considered very image/vanity based, rather than "health".

    For what we do, physical therapists and nutritions are better for when we get injured or need/want professional help with diet.

    I would guess you get a lot more training on it once you hit residency based on what type of medicine you go into, but:

    I just finished up my first year, and weight/obesity/diabetes is all of 1 Biochem test---which is lumped into 1 big test with Physiology and Neurology---so 1/3 of a test? I didn't really feel like they went out of their way to dispell anythings.

    I got that lowfat foods make you fat b/c you think they're healthier, so you eat more.
    HFCS and Diet Cokes make you fat b/c hormonal signals tell you to eat more.
    There is a surprisingly upward trend in T2DM that spiked around the time HFCS came into wide spread use.

    The argument of "Just tell the patient to not eat" doesn't fly either. Obese people don't not eat.

    The clinical courses focus a lot more on your ability to communicate with the patient regarding their diet and lipid levels than the actual nutrition.

    You teach for boards, and I'm assuming Nutrition isn't the biggest thing on the list.
    But, here's to second year, I'm hoping/assuming it'll show up alot more. Obesity/Metabolic Syndrome/Diabetes is probably the single most frequently seen thing---sad day.
