Question Is it better to eat more protein or carbs while bulking?

    Hi

I have been having a debate with my bro about macros when bulking. I'm currently 168lb (5'8") and gaining a slow half pound of weight a week on a calorie goal of 3300 cal's. I'm eating my 0.45g of fats per lbm (between 65-80g) and my 1-1.5g of protein per lbm (between 160-190g) and the rest as carb's.

Now, my bro was debating the point that because the body has a use for excess protein, that its better to eat more of that than carb's.. But I thought that any excess calories are excess calories, no matter what the macronutrient is?

So in other words, am I better off increasing my protein to say 200-250g a day? or would that just be a waste?

As long as you steadily increase your calories to eat above your maintenance youre going to gain weight. Up to you to fit your macros around it to figure out what works best for you as an individual.

Ps, your bro is a... bro.

yes, I understand that eating over your maintenance will make you gain weight. What i should have included in that question was would eating more excess protein than carbs reduce fat gains?

No, it does not. In the end, it's total daily expenditure and intake that matters. Increase in carbs might make you look bloated and give you the illusion that proteins are superior in reducing fat gains, but water weight has nothing to do with actual fat decreases.

Increase in any macronutrients, after you hit your minimum macros, are entirely up to preference. If you find that you do better on higher carbs or vice versa, then it's best to increase that certain macronutrient.

If you are to explain to your friend, the bolded is what I believe to be most important. I believe this is one of the main reasons why people are so confused as to why they seem to be gaining weight/fat when they consume more carbs, which, unfortunately, leads to severe cuts in carbs.

Does TEF play an extremely crucial role in the bigger picture? I never believed that it did. While it certainly is true that the TEF of protein is higher than carbs, I never thought it was that much of a difference.

I mean it all depends. We're talking about bulking. Bulking long term on LOTS of protein versus LOTS of carbs can make a significant difference in calories burnt by TEF.

protein and carbs are equally important when bulking. protein for recovery and building, carbs for energy. now is it better to eat more protein then carbs? well, that varies person to person. for me, i need more protein then carbs...but for others thats not the case. you should test to see what combo works for you.

my offseason diet sorta looks like this:
    560g pro
    450g carbs
    160-180g fat

after some test n tune, youll find your sweet spot bro

my offseason diet sorta looks like this:
    560g pro
    450g carbs
    160-180g fat

after some test n tune, youll find your sweet spot bro
I hate you for being able to eat this many calories. Maybe after a couple of years, I'll get there. /sigh

Yep, when talking about a couple hundred gms of pro vs cho, you are talking a couple hundred calorie difference, which coupled with inaccuracies of counting etc can easily be the difference between a clean bulk and maintenance.

Once you've hit your protein needs then preferably more CHO for intensity. I always go over my set protein quota for the day and end up sacrificing carbs, damn meat is just too good!
