Shoes for lifting
What shoes do you guys use in the gym? I normaly use a pair of my old running shoes (nike luna elites). But I'm thinking of going down the minimilist route, and gettting some five fingers. Any one tried this? good or bad idea?
Cheers

i've got the vibram fivefingers KSOs and they're great, especially for compound exercises. i highly recommend them if you can get over how stupid they look :P but then again who honestly gives a **** how you look like at the gym

Ive used the vibrams and the chucks, and I really like the vibrams. I really feel like I can "grip the floor" with them on squats and deadlifts.
I wouldnt do any sort of cardio on them other than walking though . . .no support at all for even gentle pounding.

Actual lifting shoes if you are serious about squats, and cleans.
Chucks for deadlifts, and some like them for squats too, but no doubt hitting depth on squats is easiest in real lifting shoes, like do-wins, vs athletics, etc.
Trainers are crap for compounds btw. Squishy soles leave you unbalanced. Kinda like squatting on a mattress.

vibrams are actually designed for running, i personally haven't run in them but i've heard of countless of people who have run in them who've previously had issues with their knees and other things from running in trainers and after switching to vibrams these issues have gone away, after all humans were designed to run barefoot and the vibrams are as close to running barefoot you can come without actually running barefoot. The only issue is that it takes a while to get used to running in them

they suck for running unless you have the right build and ankle flexibility. Like I said, I actually wear them so I have no ****ing interest in you lecturing me about what you have read on the internet about them.

wow calm the **** down, was just stating that they were designed for running wasn't trying to lecture you. What's wrong with you? Why are you so defensive about running shoes?
And no you don't have to have a right build or ankle flexibility to run in them, everyone has the right build for barefoot running, like i said in my earlier post they just require getting used to since 90% of the worlds population have grown up running in trainers with raised heels that create an unnatural running style

I beg to differ. When you get to a certain weight, running barefoot is not an option, even on grass. In fact, I wear Crocs just to walk around the house. Only time I'm barefoot, is in the shower, or in bed. I need the shock absorption for my joints & feet... just walking around.
For people that say, "man didn't evolve wearing shoes". I'd retort:
1) Actually man HAS been wearing shoes for many thousands of years.
2) Man did not evolve walking around on hard tiles, concrete, asphalt, hard wooden beams, etc.
3) Man did not evolve doing the type of training and dieting that leads to the type of body that I currently have.
It's easy to try and contend otherwise, when you're sub-200. I know, I remember it.
Anyway, I've been meaning to try these vibrams - they look like they really have potential to be what I'm looking for. Only thing is, it seems like a really bad accident waiting to happen, as far as stubbing your toe is concerned. That little pinky toe is out there, all exposed. :-O

again, you are wrong . . . if you dont beleive me then check out what the runner of Crossfit Endurance has to say. And like I say, its a very moot point since you have never worn them and are just parroting crap you read on the internet.
