is calorie deficit from eating vs calorie deficit from exercise equivalent in terms of risk to muscle loss?
For example... is eating 2000 calories and burning 400 off through exercise less safe than just eating 1600 w/o exercise in terms of muscle loss?

I eat around 1800cal, I do about an hour of weight training 5x week (not sure how many cal this burns) and run 6KM four times a week and 12km twice per week. When running 12KM I'm burning 900 cal, so if I ate 1800 cal one 12KM day, ran 12KM, then my daily total would only be 900cal right? So should I eat more on days where I'm exercising more? Cheers.

Ah great, I run 6KM 4x week so that burns around 450cal, then my weight training, which is a five day split (legs, chest, back, arms, shoulders) and abs every second day, usually lasts for about an hour, 5-6 different exercises, 4 sets of 8-10 reps. For five weeks I've been having 1800 of food each day, no matter how much exercise I do, sometimes if I've run over 10KM I might have ~2000cal but that's the highest I've gone. It's working nicely. Dropped 16lb in the last five weeks, and always trying to get loads of protein!
