    Dips - snapped clavicle

Just back from A+E after hearing an almighty crack while doing weighted dips. turns out ive snapped my left collar bone clean in two. Damn painful!

I never knew dips placed so much stress on collar bones - have done them for months now without any problems. Safe to say that once i'm healed i wont be doing them again!

Taking 8 weeks off from training is going to suck though.

Weighted bench dips (where you place weight plates on your lap and have a spotter spot you while dipping) is HANDS DOWN, a GREAT tricep exercise, imo.
Dips are good for you, without a doubt. I'm pretty weak though. I can only bench dip with a 45lb plate in my lap for like 10 reps...but I'm working on doing them with a 45 AND a 25 soon.

    Ouch

Dips are a great exercise for some, not so great for others. I'm in the "other" category I think, I commonly felt high pressure in the left clavicle and the general left side of my sternum performing dips. Other times I was fine, but this lingering pain was usually there in the background.

Eventually I seperated my SC joint, it wasn't too severe of a seperation (luckily) but enough to sideline me for 5-6 weeks, +another few weeks of getting back in the groove. I wasnt lifting heavy again for chest+shoulders for 10-12 weeks.

Injuries suck, hope you heal fast My recovery is pretty good now but I'm still not 100%. I think it can take up to 9-12 months for a full joint recovery, and the chance of never fully recovering is up there. Surgery is almost a non-option since the joint is so close to the jugular.

How long do you have to do the dips for before you experience an injury in the collar bone?

    6 years 52 days 11 hours 9 seconds. Seriously.

Come one man, what kind of a question is that? Not everyone is going to get injured from dips, and even if it does happen, it'd be different for every person. There's like a million different variables in there. How much wt? How strong are your bones? How much do you weigh? etc.

Thanks for the heads up though. I have genetically small wrists and always feel sharp pains in those and my forearms when doing weighted dips. I'm glad I didn't push it too far.
