are you talking about in mainstream training centers or actual traditional muay thai? Traditional **** is all about taking you town as fast as possible, they don't denote ranking, they are warriors trying to immobilize you as fast as humanly possible. They don't wanna stick around and enjoy the art of fighting like karate, they wanna take you down and immobilize you.

there is no recognised system of ranking, aside from title belts.

most gyms in the west will incorporate a belt system though, and they differ widely. some have armbands, some have shirts or shorts of differing colours. the one i go to has a sash system, where a piece of ribbon is handed out and can be sewn onto the side of the waistband of the shorts.

There is no belt system in Muay Thai. Some McDojo's will give them out though as a way to show "progress". You can gain certifications though but judging criteria is all over the place so who knows what you can trust.

So if you have someone telling you they are a "yellow belt in Muay Thai", you can laugh at them.

You advance in skill by competing. And your skill is based off your record. If you don't want to compete then just keep training. Muay Thai isn't a traditional martial art, per se. It's a "we're going to go to ****ing war" style of fighting. REAL muay thai is brutal with some incredible KOs. Some knock-off schools/classes might implement their own ranking system (belt/shorts/armband color) but that's just a gimmick to keep people who don't want to compete; so they keep coming to the school.

You get better and you start winning fights. Just like in regular boxing.

There are no belts in Thailand except stadium championship belts awarded to the winners of title fights.

I've both trained and done professional bouts in Thailand.

You advance in Muay Thai by getting better. There are no belts. You win a fight against another competitor in the ring and then you feel proud about it. It's the same as boxing in that respect.

Took me 1.5 years to get my blue in BJJ. Takes some people longer. I'd question the instructor who is giving the out at 9 months *on average* because that would mean many people are getting their blue at six months. Sure, you can have a blue at six months. You can have a blue in 30 minutes by just going to the store and buying a belt. It doesn't mean anything though. What you should be after is the skill. It would suck to be a blue who regularly gets tapped by whites.

Oh I forgot to say, 9 months if you train 3x/week. Cuz you need to know 36 techniques 3 times each. more or less.

i trained at a gym that had singlet colour grading..

first nothing, then blue, green, brown, black, red (kru) <-- highest level then yellow who is the trainers.

every gym is different but that gym was legit, 9+ ring fighters and champions in the sport trained by the trainers there

I trained more than 3 times per week.

You should actually train BJJ and see man. A big part of it is whether you're tapping the whites and blues when you roll, not how many techniques you know. Almost any gym will give you a free session or week so I say just drop in.

Nobody ever mentioned to me that I had to know 36 techniques. And I have no idea what "3 times each" means.
