I honestly come from the muscular balance train of thought, so if I work on my abs and lower back together. But for abs, try crunches with your legs perpendicular to the floor and bottoms of feet pointing to the ceiling; then, with your legs still pointing skyward, try reverse crunches (e.g. force toes to reach, then lift hips off of the ground); then burn it out with bicycle crunches.
But we also live in the 21st century. There are tonnes of exercises that get you core without doing standard situps and crunches. Using the cable machine and performing the baseball swing, is a good example; or trying a chin-up, but then bring your knees to your chest when you finish the upward movement; try squatting with a medicine ball and reaching for the sky when you're lifting yourself up; or -- wow -- lie down on the floor and try lifting yourself to your feet without using your hands. Trust me, these might sound funny, but they all require abdominal strength.
