Hey Guys
My girlfriend wants to work on her legs, so far all she has really been doing is low intensity cardio work. A little background on her: She has had a couple knee surgeries (at only 20 years old) and used to be a really really good runner.
I want to help her find a work out with low intensity on the knees but also something that will help her shape and tone her legs.
Advice?

Sure....Your "girlfriend."
Leg presses seem to be a favorite of people who are trying to ease back into training after leg injuries. I'd imagine that if she can squat down at the knee without pain, then dumbell squats, leg presses and step-ups could be good choices. There's no need to jump into a large amount of weight.

just have her try out a normal leg routine that includes squats. start light of course, learn proper form.
you see athletes getting injured all the time and coming back and then using the same exercises that they always have. having surgery doesn't always mean that you have a limited selection of exercises to work with. of course if she experiences pain with something, then you to try something different.i'm hungry

....says the guy who has to consult a group of online strangers to help his girlfriend. Since we're the ones who are doing all of the work, maybe you should send her this way the next time that she needs a little "something." I'm sure that I could make up for your short-comings (no pun intended) there too.

I say body weight squats and lunges. Its more of a matter of doing everything in moderation to let the muscles build up to support the knee. Eventually she will be able to do a full out leg routine. But i say just do body weight exercises, because if she can't suppot her own weight (not a fat joke) then there is no need to add any extra pounds to the movement.
It's time to get NASTY!
