    how hard is organic chemistry?

I took it nearly 3.5 years ago and remember quitting that class after the first exam, even though I did well on the first one.

Is it just a matter of keeping up with the material and reading on time?

Is an A extremely difficult for that class?

Probably 7/10 hard. My advice, WORK SAMPLE PROBLEMS....don't think you'll do well just reading the chapters. Stereochemistry is the worst part of Ochem I, a molecular model kit will help a lot.

Inb4 "Lol I studied 15 minutes the entire semester and made an A"

Ochem II I found easier, it's basically memorizing a bunch of reaction and mechanisms. Ochem I is conceptually more difficult.

I don't need it for credit, and it can't possibly hurt my gpa, so the course can only help me. Whether I get a D or an A, it helps.

just thinking whether I should retake that or something easier in my major

is it a huge time commitment though? I could probably devote 8-10 hours a week to that course outside of lecture.. and maybe 5 hours a week to it's lab

    It's really not hard.

If you commit a small amount of time each day and keep up with the material
it's a piece of cake to get an A in. You just can't slack and do it all at the last
    second.

it's really just a matter of making sure you learn it over the semester and doing lots of practice problems. that's it. it isn't that hard. there's just too much information (especially in orgo 2) to cram.

the labs were the most annoying part to me.

Ive never taken organic chemistry so i have no clue how it is. I did take general chemistry though, i loved that class, i understood everything and aced all of my midterms. Since then i considered changing my major to chemistry since i liked it.
My question to anyone who can answer it

How much worse is O-Chem compared to learning general chemistry for the first time? We covered basic topics like Atomic theory of structure and bonding, chemical equations, gas laws, oxidation-reduction, electrochemistry, states of matter, equilibrium, acids and bases, thermodynamics and reaction kinetics and their applications to chemistry, physics, and engineering sciences and i thought it was extremely interesting and easy.

will rep for a good answer.

Yea 8-10 hours should be enough. The lab is completely dependent on how demanding your professor is with lab reports and quizzes. Could be a breeze or could be pure hell.

general chem is cake. orgo is a lot harder. but, i mean, it's an intro course. it isn't hard for someone who's done 400 level courses like OP.

Also, like I said, orgo is just about putting in the effort to drill it into your head. There's nothing abstract or conceptually difficult about it. You just need to memorize all the rules.

gen chem 1 (first semester of college) - 2.1
orgo chem 1 (third semester of college) - 3.7

all depends on how well you study.

Its like a entirely different beast than general chem. Its like learning a new language

Organic chemistry is almost nothing like general chemistry.

A few general concepts you learn in gen. chem are useful in organic, such as electronegativity and lewis structures, but having next to no knowledge of gen. chem you can still excel in organic chemistry.

There is no math, there are no numbers. It's all understanding basic reactivity concepts, memorizing some reagents, and then applying those basic concepts you learned to a broad variety of problems.

Definitely DON'T learn by memorizing or you could do poorly. You do organic by understanding the concepts. The only memorization you do is light, usually for reagents.

source: see above - set curve on pretty much every organic exam from och 1-3

ahh i see, i have done some high level Electrical/computer engineering classes and ive done Well in them, but engineering is a lot more mathematical so im guessing i wouldnt do great in it since i hate memorizing ****. thanks bro.
