lol.. i need to find something else.. my internet just kicked out a while ago when i was using bittorrent and streaming some porn. i found it very odd since this is the first time my internet has ever been down in 1.5 years of having it..
maybe verizon throttled my bandwidth because i was using torrents and also streaming videos?

Newsgroups are perfectly legal, although the content on them may not be.
I use http://lightningusenet.com/ as my provider. Cheap prices and pretty good retention.http://destroyyesterday.tumblr.com/

The prices are in Euro's not £. It doesn't matter anyway you can use the service all over the world.
The main benefits of newsgroups is that you connect to a high speed server instantly and will download at the maximum speed of your internet connection. You also don't have to worry about seeding are anyone seeing what you are downloading.
Torrents can often be slow on public trackers, and most private trackers require you to seed to a 1:1 ratio which some people may feel inconvenient.http://destroyyesterday.tumblr.com/

Astraweb is the way...either $11 month to month, or $96 for an entire year.
http://www.news.astraweb.com/specials/kleverig-11.html
http://www.news.astraweb.com/specials/96-yearly.html
Best service out there and ive tried them all. They have both US and EU servers.
Free SSL, unlimited, and over 1000 days retention.
News groups are legal, but as stated the content may not be. But because of the very nature of Newsgroups they are totally unregulated at this point with no real change coming anytime soon. Think of newsgroups as a tracker that is connected to every other tracker and stores locally on its servers everything thats ever been posted. You dont really see it via your download GUI, but each file your downloading(and your Newsgroup software is downloading and building) is actually made up of several hundred or thousand small files, usually only a few megs each. This is just another reason no agencies can go after it at this moment, the server isnt hosting illegal content. Its hosting messages with random 5Mb byte's of information, its only on your computer that all those 5mb files are reconstructed into an actual copyrighted file. In this respect its somewhat similar to torrents, except that in torrents the seeders actually does have the fully constructed file they are sharing, which is why they can go torrents.
A person on some newsgroup server in Russia uploads something, all the newsgroup servers around the world see it and have a copy of the data within minutes of it being posted.
Not that they ever could or would, but even if somehow the US or other government forced a provider to give up information it would do no good because everything is transmitted with 256Bit SSL, so they cant prove or see what your downloading. No need for stupid bull**** like Peer Guardian, which really only gives a false sense of security IMO its way too easy for the agencies to get the data they want if they really want it.
The main benefit is raw speed, no seeding, and all the other bull**** you have to deal with on torrents. It is raw leeching..the instant i hit connect or add something to my Queue im downloading at 2500k/sec(20Mb) which is my connection cap. Not only that but with Astraweb now up to over 1000 days retention, that means something some guy posted 3 years ago is still available exactly. The other benefit that most people really dont understand is crc checking and PAR files, because Torrents dont really use them. Think of them as files with the data required to build missing/corrupt files. Say you download a 5 gig movie on Torrents and 1 rar file is corrupt, your pretty much screwed and have to delete the entire movie or find the corrupt file somewhere else somehow. On newsgroups almost all are uploaded with extra PAR files which can rebuild corrupt files(up to a certain extent).
Try Astraweb for a month, setup Sabnzbd with your provided astraweb server info...download some NZB files off Nzbmatrix or Nzbsrus. I will just say it, once you use Newsgroups you will ask why you wasted your time using anything else, 100% srs. If for some reason you dont think its worth it(if you dont download much, or have a really slow ISP like DSL or something it may not be as worth it), your only out $11 bucks...
inb4 the misc 10k/day ceo's come in complaining they cant afford 8 dollars a month for a far superior service lolololLast edited by FuzzeWuzze; 07-04-2011 at 02:59 PM.

I dont get why people are still so scared about getting caught with torrents, just dont be the one uploading the file, use private torrent sites, and right now, porn seems to be who is getting hit.
Also do some research on the isps who are likely to flag you for downloading, ex. comcast, me I have roadrunner bright house, and bright house doesnt give a **** so im sure ill be finewant a cheap ps3 check out this site

Is it similar to downloading via megaupload, mediafire, rapidshare, etc? Unless you're downloading something in several parts, it would be a pain I guess... but when downloading a single album for example. Wouldn't the sites I listed be better since they're already free, and fast enough for an <100MB file

If you are just downloading small files (<100mb) like music, megaupload etc are fine. I don't really use those sites but I know that for large files the multiple links are annoying. I also don't know many good sites that index all the links.
Usenet really shines when you download large files like hd movies which are 4gb+ as you get full speed for the duration of the download.
Usenet also has really well organised website that categorise everything that is uploaded on them, which makes searching for things very easy.http://destroyyesterday.tumblr.com/

newsgroups > torrents for safety reasons. If youre just ddling music and **** from a newsgroup the probably of getting stung is so marginally small its ignorable. But then again torrents really arent that risky if you download responsibly and avoid hot_XXXamandanude_gapingangus.avi.mp3.exe, newsgroups have ****loads of those :P

I too used to use torrents ever now and then, until i came upon a post a month ago about torrents vs newsgroups.
Fuzzewuzze made a post about astraweb 11 special and nzbsrus - great advice, listen to him.
So i went ahead with my purchase, and I also use merlins-portal.net.
I'm still a little lost and confused, but...................
brb 60gigs in 2days
brb 1.3mb download, steady and constant
I just need to slow down now and be a bit more picky lol.

This is my problem, there is so much posted on Newsgroups and its all so well indexed that you can easily go into overboard mode...but be warey and ensure you understand your ISP's downloading limits. I know some ISP's in Canada have 100Gig or something Download caps, comcast is 250 Gigs i believe. After that your "unlimited" internet starts charging you per Gb...so it can get expensive.
If anybody has any questions feel free to take it to PM.
There are a few more sites you may want to look at for Indexing
Newzbin, its pay per week but you pay in like 8 week chunks and i think its only 4 Euro?
Nzbmatrix, better solution its only i think 10 USD for a lifetime membership and is just as good as Newzbin now(long story as to why).
Binsearch.info, if i cant find something on an index site i check this site. Its very bare bones and just gives you giant text lists of what it finds, but its a raw search of the newsgroup itself so it finds obscure things that people didnt bother indexing.Join KIVA - Donate to those in need around the world! And if your Savvy enough(not that difficult really), there are many automated tools to automatically download things for you...brb no more paying for Cable TV.
For those using Sabnzbd look into
Sickbeard - TV Show PVR Via Newsgroups
CouchPotato - Movie queue via NewsgroupsJoin KIVA - Donate to those in need around the world! Free $25 for signing up!

Yeah found out rogers is only 60gb a month and i hit 100% in 2 days.
BUT I can't believe how fast it is.
The hardest thing for me to figure out was that astraweb wasn't a reader, so I had to figure out which reader to use, then nzbsrus did the rest as far as downloading from astraweb goes.
Do not regret a thing.
