Wouldn't they have to eat a immense amount of food everyday? like that must take several thousand calories a day to maintain? Or am I wrong.

I couldn't give you an estimate of what I used to eat on a daily basis, but it was a lot. To put it in to perspective, when I was close to 300lbs I was making roughly 15/hr working 40 hour weeks, and I'd have anywhere from $10-$50 left in my bank account the day before my next pay check came. I wasn't paying rent, didn't have a car at the time, and my only bill was my phone bill. The rest of my money went to food.
It was pretty gross, and I'm glad to be down to where I am now. Still not anywhere near where I want to be, but a lot better.
*edit* One big thing was Cola. Easily 2L+ a day with a bag of chips with it.

I would think the more you gain the more calories you would have to add to gain more but I guess thats not the case.. the most i've been is 200 and I use to eat whole large pizzas, a box of cheese itz was a snack along with like 6 honey buns throughout the day and what ever else I could find to eat.

Excess calories consistently over time. I was almost to 300 lbs. 7-8 canned soft drinks/day, a couple of honey buns/donuts for breakfast, couple of packs of peanut butter cheese crackers for a midmorning snack, pizza hut buffet for lunch, snickers-M&Ms-doritos during the afternoon, pick up Burger King on the way home from work(couple of whoppers, large fries), indulge on oreos and milk before bed as I reward myself for a hard days work. It's easy to do. I don't miss those days at all.

Don't forget that a lot of fat people were not always fat. I was in great shape until college and was between 175-185 ~12% when I graduated HS. I didn't have any activity since I stopped playing sports and couldn't afford a gym and hated running. So when I was in high school, between wrestling, lifting club....ect I probably had a maintenance of 3500+, no problem. Then I kept eating the same amount of food but stopped exercising all together. I was probably burning only 2800 or so. That's a pound a week, maybe a little more some weeks. Every now and then I'd feel guilty and try exercising and watching what I ate but it didn't last.
It probably took me three to four years to gain about 40 pounds and I ended up gaining a total of 65 or so.
If I were average height, I almost certainly would have been around 300 pounds.Vikings--Wolves-Gophers
