    Unhappy Gas from Protein Powder?

Is it normal to have a lot of gas when using protein powder? Will my body get used to it over time? If so, how long will it take my body to adjust? This is really frustrating and sometimes painful.

How much protein powder do you consume each day? Generally, gas can be a sign that you are not absorbing your protein very steadily. I try to limit myself to 1, maybe 2, shakes a day and get the rest of my protein from lean meat, chicken and fish. If you just started on the powder, your body could be adjusting to it and you might be fine in a couple of weeks.

I had gas from protein when I first starting drinking it, but after using it consistently for a couple of weeks it went away.

Just purchased the Muscle Milk LIGHT, and not only is it delicous ( even in water) it gives me NO gas, no bloating...its a 25mg serving. I think taking a lot at one time ( 30 mg or over) might cause stomach distress, from what I've read. I take it with milk in the AM and with water after my workout. Tastes great either way.

I can definitely relate. I LOVE the ON protein, but get bad gas from it. My husband always made fun of me for it, then he drank one. Total sympathy now! Mine never went away regardless of amount of time I drank them. Since I've switched to a higher quality protein isolate (Syntrax) and another one I can't remember the name of, I haven't had that problem at all.

    hi hugs,
Yep-it took about 3-4 weeks for my body to adjust to the protein drinks. I only have one a day, and get the rest of my protein from food. I still occasionally get really gassy from them-tried 2 different brands so far. Next time I need a refill-perhaps I will try the muscle milk brand as well.

    nausea from protein

Along those same lines, I recently switched to a different protein shake. GNC Pro Performance Mega Whey which includes 40 g of protein in addition to some gluatamine and BCAAs and I became really sick and lost my appetite after drinking it. 1 serving are 3 scoops or 60 grams (40 protein + the others stuff). I think that is way too much for me so I just had 2 scoops...and I felt awful.

Anyone else ever have this happen? Should I switch back to 100% whey protein (1 serving = 1 scoop = 20g).

I havent had a protein shake since then b/c the mere thought of drinking it is making me nauseous.

Well I feel a lot better that I'm not the only one! I'll keep taking it for a few weeks (I currently take ON Whey Protein and I do one serving in the morning and one in the evening). If it doesn't go away I'll try muscle milk or the Syntrax.

    Thank you all so much!

Hi germangirl-when I first started the protein drinks-they made me mildly nauseaous, (sour stomach like), and not to be gross.....but gave me runny stools as well. That cleared up in a few weeks-but I still get gassy from them sometimes. I've tried the Walmart Brand (muscle fortress), and EAS, with similiar results for both. both around 25grams, which I mixed with milk.

    Gas from protein powder

Hey Hugs, are you lactose intolerant. I didn't realize i was until i started using Protein Powder. When i started taking things out of my diet little by little, i realized it was the lactose in the protein powders.

I use lactose free protein powder and it is the first time (after trying dozens of different brands, from egg white powder (soo expensive) to Isolate (which for some reason didn't work for me) i can finally have my shakes and have absolutely no gas. (and man was it bad, LOL).

    Good luck.

    Hey,

Well tha'ts a good point. I never thought I was, but maybe gas could be a symptom? Thanks for the info!

Oh believe me, it could be a symptom all right. LOL.

My husband was like "what the hell". LOL.

And at first i thought it was just too much protein in general, (which don't get me wrong, that too added in to your diet too fast can wreak havoc), but something told me it was the protein powder.

And like i said, there are people out there who can tolerate the Isolate Whey, which i think is a different kind of whey and i thought after researching it, that would be the thing for me, but for some reason even that did not work.

If you decide you might want to try the powder i use, you can PM me. It's sold by Dr. Fred Hatfield (Dr. Squat) so that's why i trusted it at first, and it is great.

Also, just because you never noticed being lactose intolerant with regular dairy foods like cottage cheese, or yogurt, or whatever, doesn't mean that the lactose in the protein powder can't be the culprit.

Thumbs up Gas , What I took for it

I actually was a exploding bomb at my gym after drinking Muscle milk! Noone wanted to wok out with me (giggling!:O)
I researched the whole gas thing and since I don't take medicines for anything, I found that CHARCOAL did the trick ( sorry for the caps, but I was very excited when I found this gem of a gas killer). You can buy charcoal at vitamin stores or online. Or, check this out, if you burn some toast, you can scarp off the black charcoal and munch on that, I know sound icky, but , that works very well too! And, super cheap that way too!
Try it out, I am so glad ( as are my friends) that I now take charcoal.

p.s. this is my first post, go figure !

Maybe you should just not drink the muscle milk...

It seems kind of silly to continue to take something that gives you gas, and have to supplement with charcoal to get rid of it.

There are plenty of other protein powders and RTDs out there.

The quality of the powder and/or the amount of protein per sitting you're consuming could be the cause of your flatulence issues. Your own body will tell you if you are overloading it by producing gas and bloating. Be sure you're drinking lots of water also! Try to reduce the amount of grams of protein you are taking, until this condition desists.

    Unhappy

I've tried at least a dozen proteins over the past 7 or so years and I have issues with all of them! SO it's me, and not the protein. I can't tolerate anything with a decent amount of casein, but quality whey and water seem to be not as bad; unfortunately when bcaa's and creatine are added...OH BOY.

Sipping slowly seems to help a little...if I down it too quick I sound like my 73 year old father after a heavy meal...heyyy, I forgot all about activated charcoal! Thanks!

Some of us have sensitive guts and this can help instead of chemical anti-acids.

I agree with you....This is the best answer so far. I too encountered the same experience and I too do sipps my protein shakes slowly through out the day, it does seems to work.... and I love muscle Milk, it's soo good.

Gas on protein suck, since it is an easy way to supplement meal based on lifestyle. I mean it is more appropriate to carry 1 or 2 servings of protein in form of shake than it is to carry around a whole chicken LOL. Muscle milk.... gas, Cytogainer....gas, Isopure....gas, yet strangely when mixed with old fashioned oats it seems to lessen the flatulence but it forfeits my no carb interest as of now. Enzymes I haven't tried, yet this seems like those ads for health pills on which you take care of your cough but possible side effects range from dry mouth to heart arrhythmia (exaggeration I know just want to make my point). Will try soy protein instead but after I am finished with my current Isopure.... meanwhile well..........

    Gas from Protein Powder?

Protein gas. It's the worst, huh? The good news is that you are not alone. Many people have gassy reactions to supplementing with protein. Lactose might be an issue for you but you would have probably noticed a milk intolerance by this point in your life.

More than likely your body is having trouble breaking down 50 grams of protein (2 scoops of ON 100% whey) all at once. Try cutting back to one scoop at first and then gradually increase the dose. Alternatively, you can take a digestive enzyme along with your shake to aid your body's digestive processes.
