I have been taking fish oil for about 4 years and have never refrigerated them.
A couple years ago, I purchased NOW Omega 3 Molecularly Distilled Fish Oil, and the expiration date shows 8/2012, so supposedly I have a little over a year for it to expire. However, quite recently, it smells much fishier than I remember, and the past month or so, my appetite has decreased. I can't tell if the fish oil has gone rancid or not, and it has been affecting my appetite. I'm thinking about throwing it away, and refrigerating my unopened ON Eneric Coated Fish Oil. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not. Do you refrigerate your fish oil? What are the benefits/downsides of keeping them in the fridge?
Thank you all in advance, and reps for knowledgeable answers.

Back in my college dorm, I had my fish oils right next to the window sill, on top of the heater...needless to say, they got pretty bad, and some of them turned rancid.
However, now that I'm back at home on summer vacation, they're in a closed cabinet, so I don't feel a need to refrigerate them.
If you were in the first situation, I would definitely refrigerate them if you can't find a cool, dark spot to store them.

I am taking Barlean's Omega Swirl, Omega-3 Fish Oil - 'Lemon Zest' flavor. Amazing taste. I emailed them about the refrigerating and this is the answer:
"Good morning Patrick,
Thank you so much for your e-mail.
Yes please, refrigerate after opening to ensure freshness through the date on the bottle.
Best of health,
Chris Elliott"
