Does Fish Oil need to be refrigerated?

I have been taking fish oil for about 4 years and have never refrigerated them.

A couple years ago, I purchased NOW Omega 3 Molecularly Distilled Fish Oil, and the expiration date shows 8/2012, so supposedly I have a little over a year for it to expire. However, quite recently, it smells much fishier than I remember, and the past month or so, my appetite has decreased. I can't tell if the fish oil has gone rancid or not, and it has been affecting my appetite. I'm thinking about throwing it away, and refrigerating my unopened ON Eneric Coated Fish Oil. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not. Do you refrigerate your fish oil? What are the benefits/downsides of keeping them in the fridge?

Thank you all in advance, and reps for knowledgeable answers.

Only benefit I've ever noticed from refrigeration is fish burps are a less common occurrence. A lot of people don't get them though, especially dependent on what kind of fish oil you are taking.

I've heard this, as well. Have you noticed if the fish oils happen to last any longer than normal? (Repped)

Not particularly, of course I run out of fish oil pretty fast. If I have more than one bottle I keep the extra bottles in the freezer. That does seem to increase shelf life if you wind up coming across a great deal on some good quality fish oil products you might want to do the same.

How many fish oils come in your bottle? My last bottle came with 500, so I think it would be wiser to choose something with less so perhaps disable them from becoming rancid faster.

It does not have to be refrigerated but I also think it depends if you live in an area where it can get hot in the summer. I prefer to just refrigerate as I open a new bottle.

Unless you live somewhere where it's 25 degrees celsius+ most days, I don't think it's necesarry and I have never refrigerated fish oil and have never had any problem. Just don't keep it in direct sunlight (obviously).

Don't think you have to. I do just becuase it doesn't take up much room in the fridge and it says on the bottle it will keep it fresh.

Its a good idea to keep fish oil refrigerated to help it from getting rancid, especially if you buy large amounts on sale like I do.

Back in my college dorm, I had my fish oils right next to the window sill, on top of the heater...needless to say, they got pretty bad, and some of them turned rancid.

However, now that I'm back at home on summer vacation, they're in a closed cabinet, so I don't feel a need to refrigerate them.

If you were in the first situation, I would definitely refrigerate them if you can't find a cool, dark spot to store them.

No. I usually put all my pills in my pocket for the day. the fish pills get gross and squishy by the end of the day from getting hot but that's all they do. they're fun to play with

Edit: in conclusion, hot fish oil equals fun squishy gummy bears

I bought some capsules and ended up freezing them to stop the burps, but im pretty sure that refrigerating it reduces the rate that it oxidizes.(read that online some where)

I freeze them as well and eat them at night just before bed time. No fish burps, aftertaste issues, nothing. Works much better for me that way.

I am taking Barlean's Omega Swirl, Omega-3 Fish Oil - 'Lemon Zest' flavor. Amazing taste. I emailed them about the refrigerating and this is the answer:

    "Good morning Patrick,
Thank you so much for your e-mail.
Yes please, refrigerate after opening to ensure freshness through the date on the bottle.
    Best of health,
    Chris Elliott"

I do this too, and have been doing it longer then I can remeber why I started to in the first place.

I get my fish oil in quantity (B3GOF CL Oximega), and keep them all in the door of my freezer.

Thanks. That sums it up. I will keep them in the fridge not the freezer. Sounds overkill keeping them in the freezer.
