How do you become a pro powerlifter/strongman?

    What are the steps?

How do the competitions work? Is there a natural powerlifting organization?

In strongman there are two ways to earn your Pro Card:

Option 1: Win a Platinum+/Pro-Am contest, there are usually 2-3 of these contests per year and you do not need to qualify to compete.

Option 2: Win NAS Nationals in your overall division (LW or HW). In order to compete in Nationals you must qualify at the local/regional level by placing top three in a platinum level contest, top two in a gold level contest, or winning a silver level contest.

The federation for amateur strongman is NAS: http://www.nastrongman.com/

Once you have won your Pro Card you become an ASC athlete: http://www.americanstrongman.com/

There is no such thing as a professional powerlifter, because powerlifting is not lucrative enough to be a profession. Andy Bolton, for example, is a truck driver.

Almost every powerlifter has a job to support themselves and powerlifting is done on the side.

You can't powerlift as a career, thus there are no "pro" lifters.

Calling someone a pro is generally like saying they're that good at something that it's almost as if they do it for a living. I'm guessing that's what you meant by pro?

    Nope.

If you take drugs, you are a pro. You compete in pro divisions and can not compete in amateur divisions. That is the only difference.

As TomMutaffis stated, those are the two options.

And In Strongman when you become a pro it doesnt mean you collect a pay check as well. I would say almost all pro strongmen in the US have jobs on the side. Strongman does not pay off as most believe, Its the foreign countries that the sport is more popular in like Poland and such. Americans dont look at Worlds Strongest Men like they do other athletes like football, basketball and baseball players, unfortunately. I know a bunch of pro shows do have some big cash prizes, but nothing to support a family over, and that goes with sponsorship endorsements as well. But Tom Im sure knows better than I do.

Think about all the "Pro-Am" meets. The pro division is untested the "am(atuer)" division is tested.

Andy Bolton was a truck driver at one time.

But Tom Im sure knows better than I do.
pretty much this. The Arnold and Worlds both pay 50k to the winner, but I don't think 1 can bank on winning both of those every year, lol.
