So glad I found this! I'm crazy overwhelmed with kids, work, school. I'm a certified personal trainer and have found this stuff pretty tough to study. Not because of difficulty so much as time.
My new job is encouraging me to complete my nasm cert. I purchased everything about a year ago and then got bogged down. I'm motivated to get my studying in big time!
With the current semester I'm in, I've got two classes which will end in May. At home, I've got five kids and full-time working. Assuming I can really buckle down studying about two hrs a day in May, do you think I stand a shot at being ready by late June?

With your previous experience I think you can. Just study certain things daily and let it become habit. Also try to apply all NASM info your learning with your clients.

Congratulations, your right is very encouraging to study insanely hard and enter the exam overprepared, passing it in 20 minutes gave me the confidence to blaze straight to the PES and CES.

    Hey Bradster great post man!
I have a question for you, the book states that you should train clients in phase2(strength endurance) with a Strength Exercise followed by a Stabilization Exercise. Now my question is, how are we supposed to use NASM's Vertical loading system in phase 2 (str endurance)?

Well you do not necessarily have to combine the two, but if you did you could do it in various ways. Such as just making it a super set, say your workout is this

Chest- Flat Bench 3 sets of 8,
Shoulders- Militrary Press 3 sets of 8
Triceps - Tricep Press downs 3 sets of 8,

For it to vertical loading you go from body part to body part vertically so you would normally do flat bench , then military presses , then Triceps Press downs in a circuit fashion , if you wanted to add stabilization exercises you could do one like push ups after bench before moving on.

There are really tons of variations you could do depending on the clients goals, NASM trainers don't always do strength followed by stabilization training or vertical loading they are just a few of many tools.

For strength endurance training you would probably just stick with Horizontal Loading.

Well I just finished reading the book, and now I have 2 months to study for the exam. I didn't make note cards as I went, so it sounds like going back and doing that is a good starting point. Also, I didn't get any DVDs with mine, so I was wondering how helpful they are in preparing for the test and if there is anyway to get them now?

Thanks to the OP and everyone who has posted so far in this thread! It will definitely be a huge help!

I like the DVD, it covers slightly different information and is intereeting. NASM could probably get you a set if you call them.

The fourth edition has an entire online course with videos covering every section, activities to complete while watching the video of the section, quizes for each section, and a practice test.

Log in to NASM.org and go to the elearning center in your account to get to the online content. On the front of your textbook is info on how to get to the site with the online text and quizes.

That is interesting it looks like they did drop the Dvds, but my own learning center updated some new content as well. Pretty cool , but I did like the DVDs for laying in bed watching it lol.

I've been studying for about a month and half now. I've gotten a good study routine down now as I've been consistent with it. I'm about to begin Chapter 13 and it seems like it's all coming together.

My target goal is to be ready to test by June 1st. That leaves me a little over a month to knock out the last 7 chapters then completely review the book entirely.

At chapter 10 or so I went back over all the chapters I completed and wrote down what I felt I didn't have a full grasp on so I could go back and run through those sections again to make sure I study it more.

I'm taking the chapters test online BEFORE and AFTER I start and end a chapter. Before, so I know what I should be looking out for, and what I should really focus on and after to make sure I've gotten a good understanding of what I just read.

If anyone has any key areas of focus that they felt the exam really covered please let me know so I can make sure to review it even better.

Thanks, can't wait til I take the exam!

Oh I'd also like to add that one of the biggest things I would change in the text of the book itself is either adding a chapter of all the muscle groups or just implementing a section dedicated to all the muscles of the body. It seems like they just throw it at you expecting you to already know the scientific name of each muscle. So for someone like me who is/was not familiar with all the muscles I have to resort to memorizing them from the appendix in the back (which isn't that great) or looking them up online.

    Hey All!!

Im so glad I found this thread! Thanks Brad for starting it! Im only about 3 weeks in and I feel good not being alone in feeling like there is so much info but am relieved that it gets better. I have always worked out and been an Instructor of many different disciplined for my whole life, so alot of the concepts are familiar but the definitions and specifics I will have to get to know. I found a flash card program for Android that helps alot, I will sit at night with my kids and study them and study the book and online during the day.

Just really cracking in my NASM studying, and I feel like this thread is going to be a godsend. I'm trying to get certified as quickly as possible because I've had a few job offers for when I finally get the certification. Thanks for putting this together! I know I'm going to be utilizing it like crazy

Awesome, I am glad you decided to get started! Try upward mobility's NASM App, it is the one that helped me the most with 300+ unique questions AND explanations why the answer is correct.

I was already certified by the time it came out by NASM also released a application of their own.

Just seen this post and much like everyone else, I'm pretty excited I found it. I have a question. Have you heard anything that indicates there being a huge difference between the tips given about the NASM exam that are based on the 3rd edition and the updated info which is based on the 4th edition or is it all the same?

I actually talked to a NASM rep on this and they said the test itself rarely ever changes as little to none information or facts change j, ust wording and page layouts.

i talked to one of those NASM reps and they pretty much told me the online practice test was a joke (my own words)

can someone recommend me a good app, flash cards or online study guide?

also i noticed you said "I get results from everyone I train or give them a refund"

how do you work this out? (ive been thinking along the same lines)

On the android marketplace NASM by upward mobility is the best.

On the refund just say that to them basically, if they buy a 8 week course or so. Also make sure they come at least 4 times a week for that, studies have shown the results from 3 to 4 days a week training improves by as much as 50%

    P. S I am leaving in.a few hours for Orlando so I cant respond here until Sunday!

It is the one I used to study for my CPT and to freshen up for my CES, PES and now FNS

The refund is at your discretion and is more of a bold statement and attention getter. Nonetheless always deliver, in 8 weeks you can make a lot of results happen. I have never had it ever even brought up after my first guarantee, if anything people offer to take me to dinner for a bonus.

Train them well, always be 100% honest and straightforward and they won't mention it.

I'm a single working mother and time is an issue always! I bought NASM and when I began to study I treated the course like an anatomy class and as I got into it I wanted to figure out how the whole thing "really works". I put the flash cards down and started to apply the terms using my body, feeling my muscles move, and made it as practical and applicable as possible! When I took my test I realized that memorizing information wasn't going to get me to pass so the approach I took really worked for my advantage) Anyone preparing should apply the program to their own workouts while making practical note of how movement and adaptations occur. That was very helpful to me!

I just got my 4th Edition book in the mail today.

I have read through this thread I didn't see anyone has answered what page 169 is in the Fourth Edition. I'm pretty sure it is p.183. It looks very close to the link bradster posted to the 3rd Edition version with very small wording differences.

In 3rd Edition it is called Overhead Squat Solutions
In 4th Edition it is called Compensations, Muscle Imbalances, and Corrective Strategies (It never mentions overhead squats solutions anywhere on the page, but it is almost identical to p.169 of the 3rd edition)

    3rd Edition p.169 = 4th Edition p.183
