What metal is used to make dumbbells and olympic plates?

Are they made of steel? Hex dumbbells feel different, but are olympic plates and plate attached dumbbells made from steel?

I always wonder what it would be like if they were to be made from very heavy metals like say tungsten. It would be pretty cool to have dumbbells that are 2-3 times heavier than they look.

I'm thinking it is just cast Iron. The exact mix might vary with who ever is doing the foundry work.

For most, it's iron. There may be some proprietary mixes of metals, but it's almost always iron and rarely if ever steel.
You need a rack, bench and 300-lb. Oly set. Now, what was your question?

Generally speaking, yes. Is there a particular barbell with which you are concerned?

Thanks, no was just wondering about the Olympic barbells. But EZ curl bars would be different?

Although some barbells I have seen seemed like iron, I mean not sure but they were darkened and rusty.

All barbells are steel of some type, excep perhaps some of the Olympic techinique bars which might be aluminium. plain iron would be far to rough to have spinning parts and to brittle to make a decent bar. No matter what type or shape of bar it is going to be steel.

Plates I believe are also cast steel, though they may be iron, but cast iron has a bit different ring to it than most plates, and would be more fragile when dropped.

    Thanks, that makes sense.

The hex DBs must be some other metal though, it feels like grainy textured.

Because they would be sexy as fawk, especially when polished.

Your dumbells are most likely cast iron.

Thanks man, that makes sense, I always thought they felt cheaper compared to other DBs I used.

Anyone knows where can one get these color plates? What are they called?

They must be steel too, right?

I just like how they don't have holes, dents so it's like symmetrical on both sides. If I had a gym, I would wanna get those ones.

Yes but I would find it interesting to see say a 40lb size DB to be 80lb. I could see the weight written but still it would be weird. Also if DBs are smaller then I think it's easier to control them relatively.

I always wonder what it would be like if they were to be made from very heavy metals like say tungsten. It would be pretty cool to have dumbbells that are 2-3 times heavier than they look.
Hex: some are made with cast-iron heads and steel handles (+ there's several ways to fasten the handle into the head -- some good and some not) and there are probably still those out there that use have a cast handle (not good) or (maybe) a cast-handle with a piece of rebar inside (not good either, but better that the former).

A couple of posts in this thread I think were referring to "barbells" in the sense of "Olympic bars" rather than "plates." For bars -- I've seen some cast-iron sleeves. It's an inexpensive way to do it and not a good way to do it. Someone posted such a bar here where the sleeve snapped in two (the guy ended up sending to me as I was curious to look at it). When we think of plates we're usually thinking of cast-iron plates. There are a lot of variations of that material being used to make plates -- some good choices, some not.

You can google cast-iron and ASTM if you're curious about grades of cast-iron. Different applications require (ideally) different grades.

We did a brief write up on cast-iron Olympic plates and what to look for in an article entitled "The Making of the Perfect Olympic Plate" You can download it in PDF at www.ivankobarbell.com/press if interested.

We just made some prototype stainlesss plates -- sort of based somewhat on the proportions of our urethane plates -- they look pretty good to me I'm not sure what (if anything) will happen with that though.

Thanks man, this is very good info.

What really surprises me more is the DB variations. I see most DBs get huge with heavy weights. But I see some DBs that are somehow considerably smaller. Hex and plate based (fixed) DBs are huge but I saw some rubberized DBs that are say 110 lbs but not a huge.

They must be mixing some heavier metals then.

    Any ideas?

Personally I would really like if the DBs as small as possible.

    Cheers.
