does your gym make you sick?

Since starting back to the gym this week I have noticed that I have started getting headaches, running nose and just feel like crap.

I think I picked some sort of virus up from the gym. Anyone else get sick more often from their gym?

I get sick but not that often and it is almost impossible to say where one picked up a "cold". We are exposed to germs and viruses everywhere we go

I have just developed a rash on my back that I am now almost 100% certain came from my gym's hot tub.

I am still not sold on this whole sea water thing. Give me good old fashion Chlorine and Chemicals to kill nasty germs anyday.

I'm the one with the bottle of antibac and kitchen roll wiping down the benches, mats and machines before and after I use them :-) Some of the guys could do with carrying a drip tray around with them lol.

Same here. Always carry disinfectant and hand-wipes in my gym bag. Before I retired, had seen too many cases of community acquired MRSA infections (due of one of the primary causes, shared gym equipment). I'd amend your last statement to say that some of the guys are real pigs in that they never clean up their messes.

Saw that yesterday @ my gym. Guy was fairly well built and curling 115 sloppily on an Olympic bar in the power rack and peering greedily at himself. Then walking over to his 2 buddies at the bench press and dispensing pearls about getting girls.

    Sounds like allergy symptoms.

Probably developed an allergy to the crappy disinfectants all of teh germophobes are spraying all over.

Or it could be super bugs created by the overuse of disinfectants. We who work in biological cleanrooms know you need to carefully rotate your disinfectant regimens so as to avoid selecting for resistant environmental organisms. Your average gym just ain't that sophisticated.

Well..... there is very run down from extra exertion and intensity and there is picking up a bug or germ from the gym. It can be difficult to separate the 2.

I'm a germaphobe, and I disapprove of this message.

To the OP: Since you've been away from the gym as you say--you might just need a few weeks to build up an immunity again. Like when kids are home for the summer, then they head back to school. A lot of times, they're sick those first few weeks. Hope you get to feelin better.

Strenuous exercise can weaken your immune system temporarily, especially when getting back into it after a layoff like you said.

I only get sick from my gym when I push it over max Srs - the gym I use has a cleaning service come in twice a week. Very clean gym. I have been to a few where I would leave looking like I was working a field. That made me mad a bit.

I doubt bi-carb disolved in water with tea tree is the cause of any superbug problems. However each to their own opinions :-)

People who avoid germs at all cost are the ones who get sick alot. Thier bodies never get a chance to build up immunities to common bugs. I wipe equipment off after I'm done, as a courtesy to others, but the only time I wipe it down beforehand is if there's a greasy hair slick on a bench.

Haven't had a cold or flu in many years.

I agree with the guys who say it's probably stress related from suddenly becoming active again.

LOL!!! The general public often refers to either community acquired (CA) or hospital acquired (HA) methicillin-resistant Staphylococus aureus as a superbug. On a list of risk factors, two of the most important ones are: 1) Participating in contact sports. CA-MRSA has affected sports teams. The bacteria spread easily through cuts and abrasions and skin-to-skin contact; and 2) Sharing towels or athletic equipment. CA-MRSA has spread among athletes sharing razors, towels, uniforms or equipment.

So, you wiped down your wet bench with your sweat-soaked wet towel rather than walking over and getting a dry towel and disinfectant to clean up your mess. True, you're better than some, but don't expect me to follow you without cleaning the bench again. I can only imagine what your kitchen and bathrooms at home are like.

No, but my job certainly does. The gym makes me well, makes all life's bs go away even if just for a little while.

Its probably the ventilation, most commercial buildings are sealed now so all air is circulated through filters which get moldy and make people sick. Happens all the time in offices, especially when the AC first starts coming on again. I personally almost never get sick. I've probably been sick a handful of times my whole life. Kind of sucks considering I can only use my sick days at work for real sicknesses causing me to have to fake em lol.

Nope, gym doesn't make me sick -- and neither do I worry about it. Luckily, I have an immune system which means I don't have to obsess over whether every piece of equipment might be covered with germs.

The only thing that makes me sick about my gym is that it closes at 7pm over the weekend. WTF is that?

Mine closes at 9pm on Fridays, and 6pm Saturday and Sundays. I like to work out from 9pm to 10pm. I've been thinking about joining a second gym, but my wife would have a cow about me spending for two memberships, lol. (No WK)

I don't like all the stuff that goes with a public gym, so I train at home. I mean, I don't mind if my wife's downstairs with me. Or the dog. But that's about it.

So, no. My gym doesn't make me sick. Other peoples' gyms do.
