Ubuntu Unity

Any Ubuntu users here change their opinion on Unity? I really disliked Unity in the Alpha and Beta's. But after learning how to change it's settings and what lenses are, I'm impressed with the bold decision to move from Gnome.

Lenses are something I think will change the way we use OS'. What lenses are you using and want to see be made?

I use Awn and Gnome Do. A very powerful combination. I have Unity and the gnome panels turned off.

Unity has potential but I won't even consider switching until they implement proper file searching.

I'm not impressed with Unity either and it's barely usable and appears quite dumbed down. The best use for Unity would be for netbooks and ultraportables where screen real estate is rather limited. Also If the file searching and file management are improved this could be a great interface for new users and for users of netbooks.

I for one prefers a rather clean desktop without the clutter so I have a KDE desktop with few icons on it

@gnahc92, a lens weird to explain. For example, I have a Book lens that allows me to search for books from Google Books, free or not right from the dash and results show up there too. No need to open a browser. So a YouTube one would show video results straight from the desktop. Removes the need to use a browser to search. It takes you straight to the right URL.

I have Launcher always on show and set to 32px size. I have disabled the backlight except for pulsing on program startup. With menus going into the panel, my screen real estate is exactly like it was in 10.04, since I had two panels top and bottom. Only this way since my monitor is widescreen and websites are made width considered for smaller screens, I'm benefiting by using the empty sides that take up ad space rather than content space.

Yep see the link to add it. You can also remove the default File search to save space.

I'm still not wild about Unity's layout. It uses more screen space and is more cluttered than my usual setup. What I'd like to see is for them to eliminate the top panel, and give me more flexibility in the appearance and placement of the left panel.

I like it...very nice and eyepleasing as the bar looks like what you'd find on MacOSX..just one thing ever try centering it like on a mac? Didn't you once have a compiz sphere pic that showed like 50 instances of vlc playing?

I have Debian Sid right now and with KDE desktop...so I'm sure there is a package that can implement an app bar like in the picture

Looks pretty cool. I get what you mean about panel. I'd like that gone too with the indicators showing up in the launcher in a checkerboard.
