Do both AND....
do both, why not have the best of both worlds, although i must admit some info on which works what better would've been great. I assume with barbells you have less control thus you need your minor muscles to work harder i.e you're working other parts of the bicep aswell.
Also if you're at a gym or use a resistance band and make your own substitute cables, you can fully SHORTEN your muscle. According to mike chang's special guest "ben pakulaksi" by FULLY shortening your muscles you grow them FASTER and more efficiently as your nervous system is forced to recruit more muscle fibres and your lagging body parts get stronger. This tip is amazing (NOTE: theres 3 videos one is a video that shows you a good way to lose fat and gain muscle at the same-time by igniting the leucine switch as often as possible i.e be anabolic as much as you can, I recommend all 3 videos)
cables allow you to pull the resistance behind you for a fully shorten tricep and for BICEP (the relevant topic here) is to do a bicep curl and over your shoulder.
REPEAT: Doing cable pull downs not just infront of you but pull the rope until its behind you works the tricep and doing a cable BICEP curl over the shoulder for bicep....THESE are the FULL range, going the full range is how you grow. The trick is not to go high weights like ben (a pro bodybuilder says) weights should only be used as a tool. Putting tension MANUALLY where you want to train and increase torque is the PROPER way to gain muscle.
p.s by strengthening your weak parts of your muscles example fully contract and shorten your muscle, you won't just grow bigger faster, but doing a normal curl will become more easier and you'll be doing it in proper form

If you're interested in long term joint health, no one should be doing excessively narrow or wide barbell curls.
DB allow much better alignment so you're not directing load through an elbow joint against the way it's designed to move. I pretty much always stick with single arm movements for biceps unless I'm using cablesLast edited by jk202; 03-26-2019 at 02:30 AM.
