Squat and Dead lifts makes you shorter ??

This trainer at the gym told me hes done dead lifts for many years, he lost about 1 - 1.5 inches in height, because they compress the space between your vertebrae of your spine, but he sure has a huge lower body part !!

    Is it true?

I'm 17 going to be 18 and quite worried !
If so, Can u suggest lower body workouts that won't have an effect towards my height?

How can anyone confirm this? Noone knows him. Post his name or a photo, maybe someone knows him/knew him when he was taller.

To be honest if anything i've noticed i've got taller doing these 2 exercises because my posture is better now when standing or seated. Not always hunched over now. I wouldn't worry what the PT says mate and just get the big lifts done

I'm pretty sure the height lose is due to posture more than anything else. People who do a ton of back squats and deadlifts tend to have really strong lower backs. If your abs (rectus abdomis, which bends your spine forward) can't counteract your lower back muscles, then you get an exaggerated curve in your lower spine (lordosis).

This actually happened to me when I started lifting a bit over a year ago. I did a ton of squats/dls and I thought they the abs were heavily worked just by doing them, but they weren't so I had a huge lumbar curve. I actually got slightly taller when I fixed my posture.

The best mass building exercises are squats and deadlifts. Doing these exercises on a regular basis will not only make your legs bigger and stronger, it will also generate size and strength in your upper body. In fact, increases in your squat lift will translate into increases in your bench lift. Unfortunately, the saying "everything in life is a tradeoff" is very true and these exercises are no exception. Do Squats and Deadlifts make you shorter?

The answer is yes. I talked with several power lifters at the gym where I workout. All have told me that they lost 1 inch of height. One power lifter actually had his height measured at a doctor's office and was able to verify a loss of 1 inch. I know from my own experience that I have lost an inch of height.

Squats load your spine via axial load. This creates a compressive force in your discs, in effect it presses the spinal column down. By shortening your spinal column, squats make you shorter. The same is true for deadlifts, or any other vertical lift, such as standing calf raises or seated shoulder press. That compression force is especially bad if you have a history of lower back pain.

What do you do? No man likes to lose an inch of height, especially if he is less than 6 feet tall. The leg press is a poor substitute; it creates significant shearing and compressing forces in the spine. This is due to the backward rotation of the pelvis during the movement. Isolation exercises such as leg extensions and leg curls generate tremendous shearing forces on the knees, and are also poor mass-building exercises.

The best alternative is the one-legged leg press. By placing one foot on the ground, it directs kinetic energy into the ground instead of your spine. Of course, the weight is much lower; doing any exercise with one limb is much more difficult due to the greater need for stabilization.

So what do you do if you've already lost an inch of height? There are exercises to help you regain height and even gain an inch. These exercises will be discussed in the next article.

Do you really believe that this is a credible source?

I have never heard of someone getting shorter by doing squats and deadlifts. On the contrary, because these exercises can help improve your posture.

It sounds crazy, but it's true.

It all started when I was back in highschool. I was a 6'8" shooting guard on the basketball team as a freshman. I was averaging a triple double and was catching the eye of many major Division I schools. Like any dedicated athlete, I wanted to give myself whatever edge I could. I started working with the strength and conditioning coaches in the offseason. For a while I enjoyed it quite a bit. The extra test release caused me to sprout my first chest hairs. The ladies began to notice me. I was living the high life.

Then one day it all came crashing down. Hard. The test release dried up. My chest no longer sported a full mane. It was as bare and smooth as a child's bottom. I started to lose an inch in height every week. At first I could still shoot over the defenses. I thought maybe I just needed new shoes. But it continued. The scouts stopped coming to my games. I was forced to become a bench player. I was frequently mistaken for an oompah-loompah, and was the butt of many cruel jokes. It was like a bad dream I couldn't wake up from. I don't wish this twist of fate on anyone. Don't make the same mistake I did, and stay away from these dangerous, dehabilitating exercises.

All you need to do is hang from the chinup bar and totally relax after the end of each session. You should be doing this anyway. Regular deep tissue massage is also a must to anyone lifting heavy.

Plus always go for the happy ending after the massage.

Since I first started squatting I've grown over 6 inches. So squatting actually makes you taller.

I read on another forum a chick swearing up and down that yoga made her 1.5 inches.

The bottom line is exercises like Yoga and Pilates increases ones strength, improves posture, etc. so in fact I doubt if they got taller, rather they started standing up to their full potential. Most people are around 1-1.5" taller in the morning then they are at night. Due to being upright all day long the spine does in fact get compressed.

Having a stronger core (from Yoga, Pilates, Squats, Deadlifts, etc.) will help limit that compression.

OP that article you posted is flat out wrong. In fact, some would argue that squats and deadlifts make you taller/ will make it less likely you strengthen with age as it will strengthen your muscles as well as bone structure.

lmao thats not true. You don't actually grow from doing squats, your body grows naturally. The only time you would see an increase in height from squats would be from the better posture you get from doing them.
Don't stop when you're tired, stop when you're done.
