It can be depending on the school and the particular field of study within political science.

Most people equate it with government classes they took in community college as oppose to international security classes at a top ten school

after getting one, I'd say so. the only job u can get that has any real potential of making lots of money is becoming a lobbyist.

other than that most ppl use it as a stepping stone to law school.

edit: i'd say it's the best stepping stone for law school because u can take many law related courses that use the Socratic method that resemble actual law classes. I took 3 poli sci con-law classes taught by an ex-law school professor and he taught the class the exact same way he taught law classes. I should know, I went to law school. It may not fufill the diversity requirement in schooling but at least you'll have a good idea of what you're getting yourself into.

the degree in itself won't really give you any skills but it's a decent stepping stone to other programs

This is the argument most have, but it is false - Yes, it requires different types of research methods, but it is still a science, if not one of the "hard sciences." Couple that with the fact that it's pretty difficult to get a job related to the field of study and there you go.

That being said, I find much of it quite interesting, especially the sub-field of International Relations theory. I ended up getting my M.A. within the field, because it interested me, not because I was looking for something marketable.

Only reason I did it was to graduate with honors and get into a good Grad School.

I couldnt be an engineer or anything, Im not smart enough in those studies, but was smart enough to figure a path out to be successful.

They say that because the degree in itself does not usually get you into any careers that make good money off the bat like say engineering.

If you use that degree to go on to graduate school (lots of law students majored in poly sci), ph.d etc then you can make money.

    Because it's not ****ing science
A large amount of science majors are f'cking useless as far as getting actual jobs are concerned....unless you get into some professional school like medicine. There is a reason every science kid is pre med lol.

Poli Sci does not really teach you a skill. You can always network and use the people you meet to get a good job afterwards. As far as actual studies are concerned, you cannot get too many jobs with poli sci.

If that is how you choose to describe it, then yes.

Nowhere else would I be able to do the things I get paid for, however.

I'm a big proponent of Mearsheimer's offensive realism. Though I do feel Wendt's notion of constructivism does hold an important piece of the puzzle. To be fair, I'm not really up-to-date on any of the literature published post-2007 as my career has been the focus of most of my reading as of late.

I got my MA from the University of West Florida.

Its like a lot of similar degrees:

    History
    Polysci
    Sociology

    Psychology

I put psychology way down here because tons of dumb people think getting a psychology degree will allow them to be a psychologist/psychiatrist, where History/Polysci guys for the most part know they need to go to grad school or get a second/third degree such as an education to make their History/Polysci degree more valuable.

Anyway, for most of those degrees, with the job market the way that it is, you almost have to go to grad school to get a decent job. For psychology, you can get masters or phd in counseling, or psychology or something and you can get a decent job. For Polsci you can do the same(masters/phd), and get a government job, or teach. Or do what most people do, go to law school (also applies for History majors as well, another Law School feeder degree). But the degrees, on their own, are not nearly as valuable as engineering/hard sciences, which is why they don't get as much respect.
