Gym Membership is so EXPENSIVE!!!
Ok guys and gals. Help me out. I have been going to the gym for a year now. At 24 hour fitness Pearl City, Hawaii I paid a one year membership for one club access for about $600 and had a trainer for almost $40 an hour. It's Hella expensive I know but I do like Pearl City. It is clean, lot of room, lots of classes, just I don't think it's worth the money any more. I need to cut back and save more money. So when I ask to cancel my membership due to the cost the manager gave me a deal for $39 a month. He said I can go to all gyms too which I don't mind. Do you guys think this is worth it? I do wish it was cheaper!!!
Im shopping for deals and YMCA in Hawaii was good when I had it when I was in college but it's about $50 a month too so not worth it to me. Nearest location is Waipahu, Hawaii for me so out of the way.
I checked out Powerhouse in Aiea, Hawaii and they said they can give me a membership for $30 a month. This is a smaller gym which i like so not crowded but not enough classes. It is in Aiea and if I want I could go to the town location no extra cost. It's seems way cheaper so I'm looking at Powerhouse.
I know I can do without a gym, but im a social person so I guess I want to be around people, even if it mean I am interacting or not interacting with them. My goal is for tone/strenght/resistance. I have a elliptical and 10lbs weights at home. I can do cardio on m own and lift a few weights. I can follow along a video, I even have some Beachbody products like Insanity and 10 minute trainer. I am social person and I do get bored doing the same routines all the time. I like taking classes like Zumba. I did have a trainer with them at one point, but when it came to lifting I felt like he was trying to make me a bodybuilder... I did not feel comfortable lifting heavy weights. I never really lifted before and I need the guidance, practice and want to feel safe when it comes to lifting.

If you were willing to pay $600/year, then $468/year with more access certainly isn't too bad sounding. I get my gym membership through my job so I haven't needed to look in a while, but it seems people pay anywhere between $20-$80 per month. It's only worth it if it's important to you, you'll actually use it, and you have an extra $40/month to spend.

Drop the trainer. Use what you'velearned to work out on your own.
Drop a few cups of coffee a week and that'll pay your membership

Do you have health insurance? My insurance has special rates on a lot of the gyms in the area I'm moving to. Also, they will beat any price given to me by a salesperson by 5% (if it's under what is quoted on their website.) It may be worth giving them a call. If you still have your student ID card, some gyms will give you a discount for that. Also, offer to sign a longer contract and they may drop the initiation fee/monthly dues. (Less money each month but amounts to more if you're committed.)
Do you need the classes? Do you need the trainer? I originally joined my gym *for* the classes, but soon found that I belong in the weight room, not in the dance studio. You may be different though. If belonging to the gym is important to you, perhaps re-assess the other areas where you spend money. If you make something a priority, it can fit into your budget. You may just have to cut back in other areas.

Where do you train?
I'm paying $476 a year for the University gym which has lifting platforms etc. etc. For someone who isn't a student it's $550/year.
The amount you're paying at the Uni would get you access to three gyms, several pools + sports facilities, a rock climbing centre etc.

Really wish mine was cheaper! But even the YMCA here is $48 and keeps going up. I was good with them at $35 a month for student discount but once I hit 26 years old they said I was too old to be a student
I think I pay $50 now for the 24 hour gym but that includes unlimited tanning. (I know I don't need to hear about the tanning part..) And the gym is a LOT less crowded most of the time.

finally someone else in Hawaii!
Yeah, I had to cancel my membership there too. They never gave me a $39 rate when I decided to cancel. lol. Lucky.
I say it's worth it. Can you really put a price on a great body? I mean, think about it. Liposuction is about $6G depending where you go. A great work out daily and possibly a healthier attitude is less than 500 a year... soooo... Stick with the gym if it's going to keep you motivated to work out.
I have a gym at my apt and work so it made sense for me to quit.
Want a workout partner? lol. I'm looking for one. lol

Joining the gym was the best thing I did. 50 per
Month but mine is right by my house with several other locations. Many were cheaper but this was the closest. Drop cable dont go out to drink or eat and limit driving. Bam! Saved you 100 per month.

I decided to stick with 24 hour Fitness. I was able to get a good rate $39.99 a month with all club access in Hawaii. I guess they seen the amount I paid in full and the 3 months of training that I did with the trainer and they felt bad if they decide to lose me... but I am quite happy cuz i can keep going to my gym at a cheaper cost, take the work out classes and keep doing my thing to be healthy.
I lost track of my goals... ultimately in the end I forgot the whole reason why I decided to pay for a membership. It was so I can start getting serious about my health, work out, do more cardio, eat healthy and be healthy!!!
I figure if I try to cut of my membership now, I may be losing sight what is important. Health and fitness is ME!!! If I care about my health, then it doesn't matter how much I spend to be healthy right. If it means spending $50, I better be using the services or it wont be worth it right...
Thanks guys for all your help and comments.

I pay $29 a month but that does not include child care. It's $2 an hour per child. Lucky for now, I go while my son is in school in the mornings but the summer is gonna be brutal.

The gym I work at is $70 a month and trainers run $69-$99 per session ... plus most clients pitch in another $300-$400 in tests and HRM's to get started with a PT ... $600 a year plus $40 for a PT session is a great deal, lol!
I wouldn't just ditch the trainer just because people tell you to ... everyone has their reasons to work with one, keep one if you can afford it and it makes sense, get rid of him/her if it's not worth your money to train with them. To each their own.
