2.80 is actually the average gpa out of all the students that graduate from my university.. considering engineering is the roughest major there, I would venture to say that the average engineering grad comes out with even less than that.

I'm hoping I can make a connection, gain some research experience, or demonstrate my knowledge to an employer.. otherwise I feel screwed.

Lulz, you're joking right? Maybe not in OP's case (transmission/distro/ power engineering), but there are so many relevant computing industries that have tons of EEs. Also, I took the exact same courses as EEs except for 3 CS type electives..

OP I went Purdue west lafayette also, only for 2 years then I transfered home to Purdue Calumet (A satellite campus of Purdue). Jr in EE, I am pretty confident on finding a job after graduation. I think 90% of finding a job is is doing the leg work to get the interview. I am planning on going into Hardware design. I have had no experience in EE so far but I got a internship at Motorola for Hardware Design this summer. I have a 3.2 GPA hopefully is this semester went as planned, grades come out friday. I had about a 2.7 up until my sophomore year. I started EET then switched to EE so I am like a two year Jr having to spend a whole semester taking engineering math instead of tech math.

    Cliffs:
    Dont worry Purdue Brah
    Be motivated
    apply online literally everywhere
First job may not be the best, but hopefully in the area of EE that you can see yourself making a career out of.
    Good Luck!

If you could suggest any area to look into in regards to the utility industry, what would you suggest? I have books on transformer engineering, protective relaying, control/automation/distribution, transmission lines, and protection engineering..

Also if I were to intern in the IT industry, would learning python/C/java/SQL/database be good enough for a job there?

have you thought about consulting? I have a lot of engineering friends in the consulting industry, most had a gpa below 3.0 and they have pretty good salaries.

be ready to explain why you have no work experience or what you did to keep yourself busy in the summers and during school (being involved on campus, reaserch,...)

That's actually exactly what I want to do in the future but I don't see how I can get into engineering consulting with no experience. I wanted to be a consultant for power system distribution planning (basically a designer for large scale power distribution systems).

How is it possible to get into the consulting industry with a gpa below 3.0 and no engineering experience?

I would say power electronics; with the nature of our energy sources changing, electric power conversion is very important. Getting into renewable energy technologies such as wind and PV design/utilization would definitely be my field of choice if I was looking to get into a utility company.

Yeah if you know those languages you should definitely be good. Companies should know that even if they utilize a different language that you don't know, as long as you know fundamental OOP/programming principles, learning a new language just means learning new syntax really..

Where I work I have never even looked at or touched the language we use for some of our stuff.. However since they knew that I had a background in other languages, picking this one up would take no time and not be a problem at all.

EE can steal any CS majors job.
brb CS is nothing more than EE specialized to computers. Narrow field with competition from EE's

C,C++,Java are musts. I would never get into the IT field. Those are TECHs
    Engineers>Techs

    Design Engineer
    Project Engineer
    Engineering Specialist
    Chief Engineer
    Quality Control Engineer
    Software Engineer
    Hardware Engineer
    Development Engineer
    Reliability Engineer
    Research Engineer
    Systems Design Engineer
    Field Engineer
    Test Engineer
    Sales Engineer

Def would and am planning on getting my masters in EE. Most larger companies even pay for employees to obtain a Masters degree.

this a wtf thread for me.

how do you not know what your job prospects are as a senior or know anyone in industry? I'm a sophomore CheE and every year we have panels with industry recruiters come have Q&As about hiring for full-time/interships and it's common knowledge that most people will have a job by christmas of senior year. i went to an info session this spring for a company that was hiring for both and the people there for full time were talking about how they were like the only people in their classes without work.

And this is at a big state school that isn't particularly well known for engineering (bottom half of top 100).

Lol dude you're crazy. You think just because you know different programming languages you can automatically take a CS major's job???

There are so many different paths for EEs, Comp Es, and CS majors to take, saying that an EE can steal any CS majors job is straight up retarded. I drifted away from my hardware focus and took some more 'abstract' CS courses and let me tell you something, I found them WAY harder than any EE/CE course I have ever taken.. Not saying in the grand scheme they are harder, or CS is a harder degree, just saying there's no way a EE major can cover all CS jobs lol. If you're talking about basic, simple, churning out code type jobs, than yeah I agree, a EE can fill that job potentially.

Thats a very low GPA. But, experience is more important in being an engineer, and if you don't have that than its going to be really hard to land your first job. But, once your in...you set.

BP, Exxon, and the like aren't interested unless you have a 3.5+ GPA or a 3.2+ with excellent work experience. They may hire more quantity wise, but they're taking the top pick.

woah this is weird. I'm literally same boat as you. just graduated civil. 2.97 (waiting on two grades so it may hit 3.0 status), lots of really good multi-disciplinary and leadership projects under my belt. Honestly, they are basically internships but I can't technically call them that. Been havin a lot of trouble finding a job but one day I woke up and decided that I wanted to just relax this summer and let loose so I haven't been looking as hard recently.

the electrical utilities companies over here are very competitive to get on with since they generally pay well with good benefits for what is fairly easy work (similar to government). I interviewed with one... it had a pretty intense screening process and wanted strong grades and resume in general.
