What are your goals? What is your definition of a "fit" body? If you just want to be thin, cardio (and a good diet) is the way to do it, but an hour at a time is unnessesary - 30 minutes of cardio, if you're keeping your heart rate up, is all most people need. More, and you're wasting your time.

If your definition of fit involves muscle definition, you've got to lift heavy weights (not light weights at high reps either). If you want an athletic physique, spend the first 30 minutes you're at the gym in the weight room. There are lots of good lifting plans out there. Diet is also very important if muscles are part of your goal - the nutrtion section here has what you need for that.

    Here's the secret -
Eat a proper diet (adequate protein and calories)
Lift heavy for muscle 2-3 times per week (squat, bench, deadlift)
Do short intense cardio (HIIT) 20 min 2 x per week
Rest - muscle needs 48 hrs to repair
    Repeat
    squat - 175 (goal 180)
    bench - 115 (goal 125)
    deadlift - 220 (goal 230)
    press - 85 (goal 100)

here's my opinion ladies. take it or leave it.

the secret to getting fit is to have more muscle on your frame than fat. a lot of the problem with diet and cardio programs is that your body composition doesn't change much. the number on the scale is lower (if that's your goal).

my wife has done all the diets and has gone to the gym with her mom (trainers, etc). Finally, she's agreed to let me get her on a program. Now, she's squatting, benching, etc (basically Starting Strength). I haven't tweaked her diet, yet. We'll see where she's at in a couple of months.
    Goals:

    1.5 bw Bench
    2.0+ bw Squat
    2.5 bw Deadlift
    Gain 20 lbs
