The short answer is yes. There not going to be any difference either. Whole over shakes whenever possible except around workouts if desired.

No you do not need protein shakes at all.

They simply help you get more protein in your diet if you are not getting enough from other sources.

Truth is not really. I've lived without shakes and truthfully there is not THAT much of a difference. Getting protein from natural foods is key no matter what. Things like whey act as an easy fast way to get fast acting protein to your muscles and sometimes its easier to have a shake every now and than rather then preparing a whole meal. Best of Luck!

Getting protein from meals is always better than from shakes.

you can buy small cans of chicken or tuna that have about 25gs of protein which would basically be the same as a shake

I went all last off season without shakes over the winter and I was fine. It never hindered gains and I met my macros. Only thing from my experience is that I did put on a little more thickness(bf). Now was my diet perfect all offseason, no, so that could contibute, but when you think about it, if you run something like isopure, it's very pure, your not getting extra fats from something like 6 oz or beef. So in total, do you need shakes, no, but they do offer a clean source annnnd much more aminos than regular food protein sources

if you used the search bar.. you woulda found it.. you dont need a protein shake as long as you get enough protein daily from regular foods.. the truth is that protein shakes just run straight through your body and not al of it would be absorbed as you want anyway.... but i mean if you dont have enough protein in your daily meal according to your workout (chances you dont) you might want to take it.

nope not needed at all. Like others have said it's mostly just for convenience. If you want about the same amount of protein while on the go, a cup of cottage cheese and a glass of milk will do just fine. It's slower digesting protein than a whey shake but will do just fine. I get most of my protein from whole foods and milk, I just keep a tub on hand in case I'm in a rush.

Yeah I agree but you have to know what else is in the food your eating. A whey shake isnt going to have any fat in it. Milk and cottage cheese may have a lot.

Easy answer to something you said, you won't lose gains just because you go off one protein for another. =]

Protein shakes don't "run right through you" whatever that means. Protein digestion is very complicated. Im not really sure yet how protein is digested but I know that powdered proteins are not because you cant digest them. Probably the opposite because they are more broken down from processing. That being said there is a trade off in nutrient density and a whole host of other factors.

very true. In general though if he's using a protein shake as a replacement for his postworkout meal or any meal in gemeral chances are he needs the fats and carbs found in whole foods to meet his macro reqs. In my case I was born and bred on skim milk so that's all I drink, I've never had to worry too much about exceeding my macro reqs but that's also just me, could be different for other people
