Average fair price for used weights per lb??

Looked through the extensive Craig's list thread but didn't see an answer to this question..

Is there a consensus from the forum on what someone should pay for used Olympic weights per pound? Not for something like Ivankos - just basic plates.

    Thanks!

Some guys will tell you no more than 30 cents a pound. That's what the professional gear flippers are paying. For others, it's 40 to 50 cents a pound. I often flip weight sets, with a bar, and I've sold them for $140 to $150. I know others here flip weight sets with a bar for $125 to $140. For anything worthwhile, such as vintage York or any Ivanko, 50 cents a pound is a pretty good deal.

Yes, there are some on bb.com who will tell you about the smoking deals they got. If you're lucky, you'll find similar deals. What I'm giving you is a reasonable range of prices to consider.

It depends on where you are. If there aren't many listed in your area, then you're going to pay whatever you have to unless you want to wait indefinitely for a good deal.

50 cents/pound is pretty good. If you find someone that is really looking to get rid of them though you could probably get weights for half that.

I usually look for less than 50 cents a pound.

I think it really depends on the supply vs demand in your area. Like on our local CL, there are never ever any Oly plate sets that are metal. They're always vinyl Gold's Gym stuff. So when some come up, they are priced pretty high because they sell quickly since you never see them on there used. And there is little negotiation, you pretty much pay what's asked or you don't get them.
I got some last week for .57 per pound, which I thought was decent.
When I buy or sell anything used, I figure half the cost of new is a good start for asking price. So like if weights go for $1 per pound new, .50 is about right if it isn't high demand or higher quality stuff.

    But. . . .

NBT is right. It depends upon supply and demand, which includes what you are looking for. If it's just weight, and weight is weight, then you should be able to some plates for pretty cheap. If you are looking for vintage 100-lb. milled York Olympic plates (as I was recently), they are not cheap and paying $1.50 a pound isn't too bad.

Yes, there is always going to be somebody, somewhere, who will buy what you wanted or bought for less than you. Doesn't mean that they are better than you, or that you aren't good at negotiating. It is really a variety of factors in play. Just have realistic expectations, do your homework, and when you've bought what you want, enjoy it in good health and don't look back.

But, also don't insult the seller by trying to low-ball him. It's one thing to get a good craigslist deal and pick up an entire weight set and Olympic bar for $50 (I have many times) or less, that you can turn around and flip for $150. It's another when someone is selling a set or dumbbells for the average going rate (40 to 50 cents a pound) and you offer 20-30 cents a pound. It's happened to me a lot. Since the clowns who have written to me couldn't figure out from my posts on cl that I know what the going rate is and I'm charging a little less than the going rate, they're going to get a nasty response back from me.

Go for the best deal, but have respect for the other party. And remember that there will always be another great deal on cl tomorrow or the next day. . .
