Cardio first thing in the morning..

    and on an empty stomach?

Sorry if this question has been askled before, it probably has!

what is the theory and benefits to doing cardio first thing in the morning and on an empty stomach?
is this Broscience or is there an body of evidence to support it as opposed to doing cardio later in the day?

Theory = Fasted cardio may burn more fat as fuel due to glycogen in muscle & liver being lower than what it would be afterr food (carbs)

Benefits = Supposed increase in fat used for energy

Negatives = increased likelyhood of muscle breakdown due to fasted state and increase likelyhood of lethargy/fatigue

My opinion = Some people swear by it. The only way to know for sure is to try it. However, the most important thing is calories in versus calroies out if reduced BF% is what you want If you dont eat in a calorie deficit you wont lose BF even if you do fasted cardio. If you do try fasted cardio, try taking a protein supplement beforehand to reduce the chance of muscle breakdown

You may also wish to look into HIIT

20mins of LISS in the morning can do wonders. Do so before you eat.

Also do HIIT in the daytime too - just make sure you get your 8hrs at least a night and you should be fine
I rep back - but I could have you on recharge

Cheers guys, will give the HIIT a go, sounds appealing due to time constraints, getting lots of protein on board so not too concerned about muscle loss, on a recomp diet anyway, got about 15 lbs fat to lose

so wait,, you went to the bathroom once or twice,, then did some cardio?

Benefits of it are that you are periodically slowing down your dormant rest time by doing things throughout the day following your cardio. I think this has to do with what I've heard be called 'active recovery'. As sleeping is a big source of recovery time, you are not just crashing to wake up and do nothing when exercising in the morning. Your muscles are lightly stretched as you do things after, and the greater heart rate accompanied helps your VO2.

Of course if you exercise at night, there are benefits opposite of this.

Strength and conditioning magazine volume 33 released a study a bit ago stating fasted cardio (done with an empty stomach) had NO extra fat burning benefits and was actually worse for you

I have no idea what alleged physiological effects or fat burning capabilities this practice would have.

I do know however that it's an excellent way to discipline yourself and toughen yourself, especially if you wake up before or at sunrise. It's like a cold shower, your mind gets stronger for having done it.
NOxplode, animal pak, dessicated liver, espresso powder and cod liver oil blended up in a big cup of extra virgin olive oil.

The benefit of doing cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach is you won't throw up whatever you just ate. It's a good way to kick-start your metablism for the rest of the day, though. As far as "fat" burning goes, your body can store about 2000 calories as glycogen. A 20-30 minute run is only going to burn about 500 calories, so no need to worry about the possibility of muscle being burned because it's not going to happen.

In Basic Military Training (BMT) we ran about 2-4 miles three times a week first thing in the morning before eating. From that entire experience, it absolutely TORCHED body fat but I also lost over 25 lbs. of lean body mass in two months. Will never do that again.

Now I'm a big fan of HIIT.
