Now first let me say I know I am no zyzz but I do try to stay in decent shape. But the gf has gained about 5lbs or so in the past few months. Nothing terrible I know, but an alarming pattern. So I have been dropping hints.
1. When we go to the gym together she seems to like to get in on lifting with me. She says she does cardio when she goes alone. I simple stated last time that she didn't have to do that, I find thin women more attractive and that I see cardio best fit for women. I mean honestly I dont get why women lift, it doesn't take much muscle to clean and make food. But anyway that's just my thing, my comment to her was more about hey you are gaining a little weight, why not use the time you are going to workout with for cardio.
2. This morning I get up at 6 to go to the gym so I text her stating I am going planning to get back a text that I am dedicated which I did. This gave me the opportunity to state that I want to stay in shape for my wonderful girlfriend.
Short of pinching at her belly and asking "what are you growing here?" amidoingitright? I do care about her so dont want to be mean.

Run with her. Just tell her it's a good way to spend more time together.

You're not doing it right at all unless your goal is to hurt her feelings and make her feel insecure, go for it.
Also, lifting boosts metabolic rate. You should know this. Maybe she doesn't like the gym environment. How bout you start going on active dates together? Biking, swimming...hiking..etc.
A lot of people HATE structured cardio."Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a misprint."

notsureifyouraresrs.... 5lbs every few months really adds up over a couple years
I hear ya and I try but she isn't much into the active lifestyle.... I guess this could be a losing battle. But in all honesty I think it's less dedication at the gym and less dedication to her diet that is the problem. She was in great shape when we met. I am nervous she is just getting "comfortable".12-5-23

My ex-wife was a ~ 5'7" 9/10 before we got married. Slowly overtime she allowed that weight to build up. I tried everything to help her keep fit and was never negative. People have to want to do it for themselves, so I kicked the bish to the kerb, attraction is to important in a relationship. Also as she got fatter her self-confidence went way down.
My suggestion say:
"I really enjoy you coming to the gym with me, it's more fun"

Just saying, a lot of women gain and lose that much cyclically just from PMS bloat.
Anyway for most people cutting calories through diet is a lot easier than structured cardio. Like linzzz said some people hate it and honestly it's way easier to get someone to clip out a few hundred cals a day with simple diet changes than spending 30 min on the elliptical. 5lbs is like 3 dedicated weeks of cutting.“I don’t like work - no man does - but I like what is in the work - the chance to find yourself. Your own reality - for yourself, not for others - what no other man can ever know. They can only see the mere shows, and never can tell what it really means.” - Joseph Conrad

then good luck with your relationship goals in 2011. If you two are on totally two opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of your lifestyles, not going to work. If she wasn't always active, it's an extremely unfair expectation for her to just start working out because you do it. You can't get into relationships and make people change.
Lettuce be reality, for people to maintain an active lifestyle, they damn well enjoy it.
But srs. Don't start grabbing her belly and making comments. It's hurtful."Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a misprint."

You are getting a bit to old to be making snide comments toward women. Women all ready have issues with body image and I'm sure she doesn't need you making comments and touching her to expose body fat.
I'd suggest you simple carry on with what you are doing and if she wants to join in then by all means let her in. But don't try to push your reality of fitness onto her.
