Police issue warrant at wrong address, kill family pet, let suffer for 3 hours

BEULAH, Ala. --

A Lee County deputy responded to a home off Lee Road 374 around seven o'clock Monday night.

Sheriff Jay Jones said the officer was serving a domestic dispute warrant. He said the individual they were looking for does not live at the address.

Dog owner Melissa Huddleston said, “And then he's like, does your dog bite, does your dog bite? You better get your dog; you better get your dog. And I was like, the dog don't bite, come here Blue. Boom! And that was...my dog was right there and he laid right there and he suffered for like three hours. He just laid there flopping around.”

Blue, the Huddleston year old lab-pit bull mix was shot in the family's own front yard.

Huddleston said the bullet ricocheted off her neighbor's window. At the scene, we recovered what could be the shell casing Sheriff Jones said they were unable to locate Monday night.

“I kept trying to call people, but I couldn't get nobody on the phone,” Huddleston said.

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said the deputy reacted after the dog charged at him.

Even though it happened in an instant, Huddleston said she doesn't know how the deputy could have felt threatened. “I replayed that in my head over and over last night. I don't see where he could have at all.”

Sheriff Jones said he regrets the circumstance occurred, and thinks the deputy did what he had to do to protect himself.

Huddleston said she her nine and ten-year-old sons witnessed the entire thing. She said the worst part was watching her dog suffer. She wasn't allowed to tend to their dog Blue, because she said the deputy claimed the injured dog was part of a crime scene.

The Lee County Animal Control took the dog to the vet Monday night.

The dog's owner decided to put it down, after they learned he was paralyzed by the bullet wound.

So, on top of everything thats wrong with this story, how is shooting an animal, that hasn't even attacked you yet, the only way to protect yourself, when entering someones yard?
