Cary A. Stayner (born August 13, 1961) is an American serial killer currently on death row for the murders of four women in Mariposa County near Yosemite, California in 1999. His brother was a victim of a child molester kidnapping, who later returned home after being captive for seven years. [More on this story if requested by you guys]

Early Life

Part 1 of his story

1. Stayner was born and raised in Merced, California.
   
2. His younger brother, Steven, was kidnapped by child molester Kenneth Parnell in 1972 and held captive for more than seven years before escaping and being reunited with his family.
   
3. Cary Stayner would later say he felt neglected as his parents grieved over the loss of Steven.
   
4. He also later claimed that, when he was 11, he was molested by an uncle.
   
5. When Steven escaped from Parnell and returned home in 1980, he received massive media attention; a true crime book and TV movie, both titled I Know My First Name is Steven, were made about the ordeal. Media seems to ruin everything.
   
6. Steven died in a motorcycle accident in 1989.
   
7. The following year, Cary Stayner's uncle, with whom Cary was living at the time, was murdered. O'rly?
   
8. Stayner attempted suicide in 1991 and was arrested in 1997 for possession of marijuana and methamphetamine, although the charges were eventually dropped.

The Crimes Begin

The murders began on February 15, 1999, when vacationers Carole Sund, her 15-year-old daughter Juli, and 16-year-old Silvina Pelosso, disappeared from the Cedar Lodge Hotel in El Portal, California, a town located within Yosemite. No foul play was immediately evident and their rental car was missing, leading investigators to initially fear that the three women may have been victims of some sort of accident. But when Carole's wallet turned up on a Modesto sidewalk, it became increasingly obvious that the women were in fact victims.

Then on March 18 the Sund and Pelosso family's worst nightmare was realized when a hiker stumbled across Carole Sund's rental car, burnt and hidden off a road in Tuolomne County. FBI agents soon afterwards discovered the burned bodies of Carole and Silvina in the truck of the vehicle. Juli Sund was found a week later near Lake Pedro after an anonymous tip led authorities to her body. Her throat had been slashed.

The triple slaying was still unsolved when Yosemite naturalist Joie Armstrong, 26, was found dead by park rangers near her cabin on July 22. Armstrong had been decapitated but this time it wasn't long before investigators had a suspect, Carl Stayner.

In custody he quickly confessed to the four murders, though he attempted to obtain child pornography from the police in return for telling all. The request was obviously denied but Stayner talked anyway, detailing his terrible crimes.

Stayner had gained entrance to a hotel room occupied by Carole Sund, Juli and Silvina Pelosso by using his position as hotel handyman to convince the women he had to fix something in the room. Once inside he pulled a gun, strangled Carole, attempted to force the girls to have sex together (evidence showed he himself sexually assaulted the girls), then strangled Silvina. After dumping the two murdered victims with their car he drove Juli to the remote area near Lake Pedro and killed her. He also revealed that he had dumped Carole's wallet in Modesto to confuse the police and had made the anonymous tip that led them to Juli's corpse. Stayner also admitted to Armstrong's murder though he again claimed he did not sexually attack her. Gaining entrance to Armstrong's cabin, Stayner tied her up and then (evidence again shows) raped her before cutting off the young woman's head and leaving her on the ground nearby.

Though some who knew Stayner expressed complete shock that he would be capable of such heinous crimes, the killer admitted that he had been fantasizing about killing women since he was around seven years old. He once left a previous job because he admitted to a co-worker that he wanted to drive his truck through the business' office and kill everybody there before setting the place on fire. He was a loner who occasionally flew into frightening rages and very seldom dated in spite of the fact that he was a very good-looking and outwardly friendly man.

Aftermath

1. Stayner pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
   
2. His lawyers claimed that the Stayner family had a history of sexual abuse and mental illness, manifesting itself not only in the murders but also in Stayner's request for child pornography (in return for his confession) and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
   
3. He was nevertheless found sane and convicted of four counts of first degree murder by a jury in 2001.
   
4. In 2002, during the penalty phase of his trial, he was sentenced to death.
   
5. An appeal is pending.
   
6. Stayner is housed in the Adjustment Center on death row at San Quentin Penitentiary in California.

The investigation and arrest of Cary Stayner was featured in an episode of FBI: Criminal Pursuit, entitled "Trail of Terror", airing on the Investigation Discovery channel.

The Baby of the Family:

Ricardo Leyva a.k.a. Richard Ramirez was born in El Paso, Texas, on February 28, 1960, to Julian and Mercedes Ramirez. Richard was the youngest child of six, epileptic, and described by his father as being "a good boy," until his involvement with drugs. Richard admired his father, but at the age of 12, he found a new hero, his cousin, Mike, a Vietnam veteran and ex-Green Beret.

Ramirez Finds a Hero:

Mike, home from Vietnam, shared gruesome pictures of rape and human torture with Richard, who became fascinated with the pictorial brutality. The two spent a lot of time together, smoking pot and talking about war. On one such day, Mike's wife began to complain about Mike's laziness. Mike's reaction was to kill her by shooting her in the face, in front of Richard. Because of Mike's war record, he was sentenced to seven years for the killing.

Drugs, Candy and Satanism:

By the age of 18, Richard was a habitual drug user and chronic candy eater, resulting in tooth decay and extreme halitosis. He also became involved in Satan worshipping and his general poor appearance enhanced his satanic persona. Already arrested on numerous drug and theft charges, Ramirez decided to move to southern California. There he advanced from simple theft to breaking and entering into homes. He became very proficient at it and eventually began to linger in the homes of his victims.

Pure Evil:

On June 28, 1984, his burglaries turned into something far more evil. Ramirez entered through an opened window of Glassel Park resident, Jennie Vincow, age 79. According to Philip Carlo's book, 'The Night Stalker,' he became angry after not finding anything of value to steal, and began stabbing the sleeping Vincow, eventually slitting her throat. The act of killing aroused him sexually, and he had sex with the corpse before leaving.

Savored Memories Fade:

Ramirez remained quiet for eight months, but the memory he savored of his last killing had run dry. He needed more. On March 17, 1985, Ramirez jumped 22-year-old Angela Barrio outside her condo. He shot her, kicked her out of the way, and headed into her condo. Inside, was roommate, Dayle Okazaki, age 34, who Ramirez immediately shot and killed. Barrio remained alive out of pure luck. The bullet had ricocheted off the keys she held in her hands, as she lifted them to protect herself.

The Thirst for More:

Within an hour of killing Okazaki, Ramirez struck again in Monterey Park. He jumped 30-year-old Tsai-Lian Yu and pulled her out of her car onto the road. He shot several bullets into her and fled. A policeman found her still breathing, but she died before the ambulance arrived. Ramirez's thirst was not quenched. He then murdered an eight-year-old girl from Eagle Rock, just three days after killing Tsai-Lian Yu.

Post-mortem Mutilations Become His Mark:

On March 27, Ramirez shot Vincent Zazarra, age 64, and his wife Maxine, age 44. Mrs. Zazzara's body was mutilated with several stab wounds, a T-carving on her left breast, and her eyes were gouged out. The autopsy determined that the mutilations were post-mortem. Ramirez left footprints in the flower beds, which the police photographed and cast. Bullets found at the scene were matched to those found at previous attacks, and the police realized a serial killer was on the loose.

Ramirez's MO - Kill the Man Quickly:

Two months after killing the Zazzara couple, Ramirez attacked again. Harold Wu, age 66, was shot in the head, and his wife, Jean Wu, age 63, was punched, bound, and then violently raped. For unknown reasons, Ramirez decided to let her live. Ramirez's attacks were now in full throttle. He left behind more clues to his identity, and was named, 'The Night Stalker,' by the media. Those who survived his attacks, provided the police with a description - Hispanic, long dark hair, and foul smelling.

Pentagrams Found at the Crime Scene:

On May 29, 1985, Ramirez attacked Malvial Keller, 83, and her invalid sister, Blanche Wolfe, 80, beating each with a hammer. Ramirez attempted to rape Keller, but failed. Using lipstick, he drew a pentagram on Keller's thigh and on the wall in the bedroom. Blanche survived the attack. The next day, Ruth Wilson, 41, was bound, raped, and sodomized by Ramirez, while her 12-year old son was locked in a closet. Ramirez slashed Wilson once, and then bound her and her son together, and left.

His Killing Spree Terrorized Los Angeles:

Ramirez's 1985 killing and rape spree continued:

* June 27 - Ramirez raped a 6-year-old girl in Acadia.

* June 28 - Patty Higgins, age 32, was beaten and her throat slit.

* July 2 - Mary Cannon, age 75, was beaten and her throat slit.

* July 5 - Deidre Palmer, age 16, survived being beaten with a tire iron.

* July 7 - Joyce Lucille Nelson, 61, was bludgeoned to death.

* July 7 - Linda Fortuna, 63, was attacked and Ramirez tried to rape her, but failed.

* July 20 - Maxson Kneiling, 66, and his wife Lela, also 66, were shot and their corpses, mutilated.

* July 20, Chitat Assawahem, 31, was shot and his wife Sakima, 29, was beaten then forced to perform oral sex. Ramirez then collected $30,000 in valuables, but before leaving, he sodomized the couple's eight-year-old son.

* August 6 - Ramirez shot both Christopher Petersen, 38, and his wife, Virginia, 27, in the head. Both somehow survived.

* August 8 - Ramirez shot Ahmed Zia, 35, and raped and sodomized his wife, Suu Kyi, 28, and forced her to perform oral sex on him.

On Aug. 24, 1985, Ramirez traveled 50 miles south of Los Angeles, and broke into the home of Bill Carns, 29, and his fiancée, Inez Erickson, 27. Ramirez shot Carns in the head and raped Erickson. He demanded she swear her love for Satan and afterwards, forced her to perform oral sex on him. He then tied her and left. Erickson struggled to the window and saw the car Ramirez was driving.

A teenager wrote down the license plate number of the same car, after noticing it cruising suspiciously in the neighborhood.

The information from Erickson and the young man enabled police to locate the abandoned car, and get fingerprints from inside. A computer match was made of the prints, and identification of the Night Stalker became known. On August 30, 1985, the arrest warrant for Richard Ramirez was issued and his picture released to the public.

A Face Revealed:

On August 30, 1985, an arrest warrant for Richard Ramirez was issued and his face revealed to the public. Ramirez, unaware that his picture was all over the newspapers, got off of a Greyhound bus, and walked into a liquor store. The woman working inside recognized him and began yelling that he was the Night Stalker. Shocked, he quickly fled the store and headed toward the heavily populated Hispanic area of east Los Angeles. A small mob had formed and were following close behind him.

Captured by a Mob:

Ramirez tried to steal a car, but the owner was underneath it doing repairs. When Ramirez started the engine, the man pulled out from beneath the car and began chasing Ramirez. The mob that was in pursuit of Ramirez, now armed with steal rods, caught up with him. He was subdued, while some of the mob beat him, until the police arrived. Reportedly, Ramirez raised his hands to the police, begging for protection, and identified himself as the Night Stalker.

Endless Appeals:

Because of the endless appeals on the part of the defense, the Ramirez trial did not end for over four years. One such appeal was to overturn the decision by a judge, for refusing to remove Judge Tynan from the case. In addition, defense attorney, Daniel Hernandez, suffered from stress, which resulted in numerous medical delays.

Haunts of the Charlie Manson Trial:

During the trial, Ramirez attracted several groupies who wrote to him regularly. The trial scene had haunts of the Charlie Manson trial, with women hanging around, clad in black robes. When one of the juror's failed to show up one day, and was discovered dead in her apartment from a gun shot wound, many wondered if some of Ramirez's followers were responsible. But in actuality, it was the woman's boyfriend who killed her, during an argument that erupted while discussing the Ramirez case.

The Virgin Doreen:

In 1996, Ramirez tied the knot with one of his groupies. She is 41-year-old Doreen Lioy, who has described herself as a virgin, prior to her marriage to Ramirez. Since death-row inmates are not permitted to have conjugal visits, then she may still be a virgin, not that anyone would care, other then Ramirez, who said her virginity is what attracted him to her.

Mixed Marriage:

Doreen Lioy believes her husband is innocent of the charges against him. Lioy, who was raised as a Catholic, respects Ramirez's Satanic worship. This was demonstrated when she gave him a silver wedding band to wear, since Satanic worshipers do not wear gold.

Sentenced to Die :

On September, 20, 1989, The Night Stalker, Richard Ramirez, was found guilty on 43 counts in Los Angeles County, including 13 murders, and charges including burglary, sodomy, and rape. He was sentenced to death on each count of murder. After receiving his sentence, Ramirez responded, "Big deal," he said. "Death always went with the territory." and told reporters, "I'll see you in Disneyland." Currently Ramirez is in San Quentin Prison, where he sits on death row, until he is out of appeals.
During the sentencing stage, it was reported that Ramirez did not want his attorney's to beg for his life. It will be interesting to see if this same bravado will be demonstrated by him on the day he dies.

He has already outlived some of the victims that survived his attack.

Yeah when I was younger I hardly slept but never this bad.

Theodore Robert "Ted" Bundy, born Theodore Robert Cowell (November 24, 1946 – January 24, 1989), was an American serial killer, rapist, kidnapper, and necrophile who assaulted and murdered at least 30 young women, and possibly many more, in the states of Washington, Oregon, California, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, and Florida between 1974 and 1978. He escaped twice from Colorado jails before his final apprehension in Florida in February, 1978.

1. After more than a decade of denials Bundy confessed to 30 homicides, but the true total remains unknown; published estimates have run as high as 100 or more.
2. It is known that he traveled to New England, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, Arkansas, Georgia, and the entire Eastern Seaboard during his documented period of homicidal activity; and anecdotal evidence suggests that he began abducting, and possibly killing, well before that period.
3. Bundy was superficially handsome, charming, and charismatic, and used these qualities to full advantage.
4. His known victims were all attractive young women and girls who usually wore hoop earrings and long hair, parted in the middle.
5. He gained trust by feigning injuries or disabilities, or by impersonating an authority figure.
6. On some occasions, however — largely at the very beginning and very end of his homicidal career — he abandoned all pretense of deception, and simply broke into dwellings in the dead of night, assaulting his victims as they slept in their own beds.
7. He sometimes revisited his secondary crime scenes to lie next to the dead women, and have sex with the corpses, until they had reached an advanced state of decomposition.
8. He also decapitated a number of victims with a hacksaw, and kept some of the heads in his apartment as mementos for a period of time before discarding them.

Biographer Ann Rule described Bundy as ...

"...a sadistic sociopath who took pleasure from another human's pain and the control he had over his victims, to the point of death, and even after."

He once called himself "...the most cold-blooded son of a bitch you'll ever meet."

FBI profiler Robert K. Ressler agreed. "This guy was an animal," he wrote, "and it amazed me that the media seemed unable to understand that."

Ted, his family, and his friends, were told that his grandparents were his parents, and his mother was his older sister.

Eventually he discovered the truth, but how and when is not clear: biographer and true crime writer Ann Rule, who knew Bundy personally, believes he did not find unequivocal proof until he tracked down his original birth record in Vermont in 1969, after a traumatic breakup with his college girlfriend.

Bundy felt, and expressed, toward his mother for neglecting to tell him the truth, and for leaving him to discover it for himself.



Ted Bundy's Grandfather

1. Ted later told a court-appointed psychiatrist in 1987 that his grandfather was a tyrannical bully, and a bigot who hated blacks, Italians, Catholics and Jews.
2. He beat the family dog, and swung neighborhood cats by their tails.
3. One morning he threw Louise's younger sister, Julia, down a flight of stairs for oversleeping.
4. He kept a large collection of pornography in his greenhouse, which Ted and a cousin would peruse for hours.

Bundy described his grandmother as a timid and obedient woman who periodically underwent electroconvulsive therapy for depression, and became agoraphobic toward the end of her life.



Ted Bundy Expressed Sociopathic Behavior at a Young Age

Bundy told Michaud and Aynsworth that as an adolescent he "chose to be alone" because he was unable to understand interpersonal relationships,[27] and though he maintained a facade of social activity in school, he had no natural sense of how to develop genuine friendships. "I didn't know what made things tick," he said. "I didn't know what made people want to be friends. I didn't know what made people attractive to one another. I didn't know what underlay social interactions."[28] However, Bundy's friends from Woodrow Wilson High School told Ann Rule that he was "well known and well liked", "a medium-sized fish in a large pond."[29]

As an adolescent he would browse bookstores and libraries in search of detective magazines, crime novels and true crime documentaries, favoring stories that involved sexual violence, particularly when accompanied by pictures of dead or maimed bodies.

Later, he would consume large quantities of alcohol (which he identified as "a very important trigger") and "canvass the community" late at night in search of undraped windows, where he could observe women undressing, or "whatever could be seen."



University Years


In 1965, Bundy graduated from high school. In 1967 he became romantically involved with a UW classmate who is most commonly identified by Stephanie Brooks. She ended the relationship after her 1968 graduation and returned to her family home in California, fed up with what she described as Bundy's immaturity and lack of ambition. Devastated by her rejection, Bundy dropped out of college and traveled east, where he visited relatives in Arkansas and Philadelphia, and took some classes at Temple University. It was at this time, Rule believes, that Bundy visited the office of birth records in Burlington, Vermont and confirmed his true parentage.

In 1971 he took a work-study job for two dollars an hour at Seattle's Suicide Hot Line crisis center. There, he met and worked alongside former Seattle police officer and future crime writer Ann Rule, who would later write one of the definitive Bundy biographies, The Stranger Beside Me. Rule insists she saw nothing disturbing in Bundy's personality at the time, describing him as "kind, solicitous, and empathetic." Her only clue, in retrospect, was that her dog, who "liked everyone", would growl ominously at Bundy, the hackles on her neck standing rigid, whenever he approached. "The lesson is clear," wrote Rule. "Pay attention to your dog!"

Bundy graduated from UW with a degree in Psychology in 1972, and joined the Committee to Re-Elect Governor Daniel J. Evans as a volunteer.

During the campaign, Bundy shadowed Evans' Democratic opponent, former governor Albert Rosellini, around the state, tape recording his speeches for analysis by Evans's team. A minor scandal developed when the Democrats found out about Bundy, who had been posing as a college student. After the election, he was offered a job as assistant to Ross Davis, Chairman of the Washington State Republican Party. Davis thought well of Bundy, describing him as "smart, aggressive...and a believer in the system."

In early 1973, despite mediocre Law School Admission Test scores, he was accepted into the law schools of both the University of Utah and the University of Puget Sound on the strength of glowing letters of recommendation from several UW Psychology professors, Davis, and Governor Evans. During a trip to California on Republican Party business, Bundy came back into the life of ex-girlfriend Stephanie Brooks, who was surprised of his transformation into a serious, dedicated professional, influential in political circles, about to begin law school. They discussed marriage, and at one point he introduced her to Davis as his fiancée. In January 1974, however, he abruptly became cold and distant, ceased calling her, and refused to return her phone calls or letters. Finally reaching him by phone a month later, Brooks demanded to know why he had unilaterally ended their relationship without so much as an explanation. In a flat, calm voice, he replied, "Stephanie, I have no idea what you mean..." and hung up. She never heard from him again. Meanwhile, Bundy had begun skipping classes at law school, and stopped attending entirely during the spring of 1974. A few weeks later, young women began to disappear in the Pacific Northwest.
