    Using heavy ropes for HIIT?

I was watching a couple of guys in the gym today. They were using heavy ropes to do what appeared to be a HIIT workout. They were cycling these with kettlebell swings and step ups.

I was finishing up my workout and they were out of the gym before I had a chance to ask them about what they were doing. I thought it looked intense, interesting, and might be neat to try.

Does anybody here use heavy ropes in their workouts? If so, any suggestions, dos/don'ts, and routine tips?

    Thanks,
    Ray

No. No harm in doing so though and would if I found a place to do so.

I did a search on Battle Ropes and some interesting things came up. I have put together the following workout, which will take about 15 minutes to complete, and I am going to incorporate this as a HIIT regimen for the next few weeks:

    1. Alternating waves - 30 seconds, with 10 jumping jacks holding the ropes
    30 seconds rest
    2. Tsumnamis - 30 seconds, with 10 jumpings jacks holding the ropes
    30 seconds rest
    3. Grappler throws - 30 seconds, with 10 jumping jacks holding the ropes
    30 seconds rest
    4. Side to side waves - 30 seconds, with 10 jumping jacks holding the ropes
    1 minute rest

    Repeat cycle two more times

I'll let you know what happens.

Most mma circuits are 5 minutes long, as that is the length of a match. Of course, I am old school and something just keeps me thinking that perhaps, just perhaps at some point some where, a real fight may actually last longer than that.

I've done them - hard stuff, it really gets the heart rate up. With that said, I hated it as it didn't seem to do as much as weights for size or strength.

I am going to do it along with my lifting schedule.

I plan to use this as my cardio in the form of HIIT.

Just did my first battling rope workout

And I am exhausted head to toe.

I thought I was in good shape, but this workout really took a lot to get through.

    Some observations:

    1. Jumping jacks with the rope in your hands is a killer. The first time through was fine. On the second set, leaving the floor was a chore.

    2. The tsunami movement blasts your core big time.

    3. The heart rate gets racing (at least mine did). I also was sweating like a pig, and it was just 15 minutes.

I can't wait to do it again.

Reviving an old thread here... But I have to say this little battle rope HIIT routine is great! I was searching the web for some HIIT workout ideas that involved the ropes and this was one of the top results. I completed the routine today and is completely drained me! I too was sweating like crazy. This is definitely going to be a part of my regular cardio from now on.

    Thanks for the original post!

Sorry to bump this old thread, but is anyone out there currently incorporating Battling Ropes into a Conditioning/HITT routine to supplement their lifting? I want to get a Butcher Sled but don't want to drop $600+ quite yet for the setup.

Just picked up the 50' 2.5" Big Red Battle Rope off ONNIT and looking for routines on the net to start out with. Looking to get great conditioning/grip work in with this.
