most sponsored athletes are just normal guys that get free products from a company, and they are basically good-will ambassadors (for lack of a better word) that spread word of mouth advertising about the company. They usually dont compete and just work out and lead a healthy lifestyle, for the most part.
if an athlete is a national level competitor, they get paid a month stipend, based on their fitness level, their audience level, and the work they do for the company. A lot of these types of competitors become actual employees of the company and do sales/marketing/etc in addition to being a sponsored athlete.
most bodybuilders have full-time jobs in addition to their contracts, whether it be a real office job or personal training/life coaching, etc. very few people in the industry, outside of actual employees, make a real living off of being a sponsored athleteSenior Gaspari Board Rep/Brand Ambassador

It varies a lot; there are some that make a living wage, but few and far between. When I had a contract, I received a check monthly plus pay for any appearances, demo and expo work as well as all the product I needed and more. Even within that brand, not all of the athletes made the same amount of cash or product.
More and more frequently you see "sponsorships" that don't include any pay.NPC Bodybuilder, Mother and Hater Extraordinaire
