2 should have been distributed to the (9+3) part...you can't separate the "2" from 2(9+3) and just divide 48 by 2 then multiply by 12; the multiplication 2(9+3) should be simplified first..

you cant distribute the 2 because it is being divided into 48.

But the fact it is a division (or multiplication) means you can't distribute it.

Read it as 48 / 2 * 12 and then do the division/multiplication from left to right.
