Why the **** is Mumford & Sons so popular???

They have the same build-up to the exact same banjo roll in every one of their songs. Cool man you can pick a banjo fast...so can half the people in Duluth Minnesota.

What I really do not understand is the current American obsession with these guys. If there is one kind of music that America does better than any other country it sure as s*** is bluegrass. There are plenty of groups in the states that do folk/bluegrass with way more diverse music and better lyrics in my opinion. If you don't believe me listen to anything by Trampled by Turtles, who is never on the radio and had to settle for opening for M&S in a recent tour.

Old Crow Medicine Show is another incredible bluegrass band who has been doing it great for years, though a lot of their recent popular stuff sounds more like country. And guess who they are opening for in their upcoming tour?

Never heard them. I think they played with Bob Dylan at the Grammy's or something...highlight of their career for sure. (although that may not have been them)

Trampled by Turtles is pretty damn good, but I'm not really sure of the reason I like Mumford and Sons more. I just do I guess.
Obstacles are things a person sees when he takes his eyes off his goal.

If you want to test your memory, try to recall what you were worrying about one year ago today.

The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.

Because people will listen to what other people listen to regardless of how it sounds in reality.

One bluegrass band that is not any better then any other bluegrass band gets a lucky marketing break. A few people catch and then others follow like sheep because they see others do it. Thus you have a band that lucks out and gets popular

Because they aren't true Bluegrass. They have a pretty poppy sound so people get into it and then get to act like they love bluegrass/folk.

Personally my favorite band in that genre is the Builders and the Butchers.

It all comes down to talent and marketability. I had only heard one song before coming into this thread, so I went to Youtube and checked them out. They are pretty good, but I do prefer Trampled by Turtles and OCMS..

That. Always saw them as more of a folk band with pop/rock leanings than bluegrass. Plus their music sounds pretty good too. Though I had no idea they had become so popular, still haven't heard them on the radio or heard anyone talk about them in person.

Yea I guess they are a little different. Still think they are a bit overrated (in CA they are on the radio all the time).

I'll have to check out the Builders and the Butchers. The Decemberists are pretty good too I guess they would fall in that category

Do not know. Don't like their music at all.

I heard a chick who was doing new-age blue grass on NPR and she had CRAZY vocals.... not sure why she isn't getting more attention - can't even remember her... name

mmmm no. Unless you mean strictly "radio that plays only songs from 2011." I can at any given time turn on three or four stations that consistently play better music than Mumford and Sons.

They collab'd with an Indian group when they were in India and the fusion between folk rock and traditional Rajistani music somehow worked. This made me love them even more.

I mainly listen to DC101 (MD, DC area radio station) and they play these phags often; I hate it.

FUKC YEAH, bluegrass thread on the misc. Huge bluegrass fan here (srs). This is America's music. I'm just lucky I happen to live in one of the international hubs for bluegrass. Old Crow Medicine Show is one of my favorite younger groups. Great music though. Stuff just clears your head on a bad day. Makes you forget about your worries.

Some of my "off the beaten path" faves
