1. German Wehrmacht (1939-1945)
2. Soviet Red Army (1943-1980s)
3. US/british armies of today

You should read some real history books, not American movies. America is the strongest army right now, but that's not hard when you're spending 680 billion a year. Wehrmacht and the Red Army were the armies of WW2. Americans were a big part of the win but they were not stronger than the Germany/Soviet armies
Strongest armies are in no order
WW2 German and Red Army
Roman Army
United States Army today
Alexander's Army
Mongol Army
Prussian Army
Grand Armee

This is a stupid topic. It all depends on funding, training and technology. Fundamentally, all men are more or less equaliy capable. So comparing the US Forces with a bunch of Arghans is not really a fair comparison.
BRB US has 500 Billion dollar annual budget for the Forces.I Rep Back 1k+, add link to a post or thread, PM if I missed you.

dont think so? the US, british armies and french partizans only faced 20% of what was left of the german wehrmacht the other 80% was on the eastern front, yet the allies still struggled on the west. ever heard the battle of the buldge? US forces lost more troops than any other battle in history, against a weakend exhausted german divisons who had no air support, was low on fuel and ammo and still holded US forces down for a long time. the German army of WW2 was alot stronger than the US of that time

America jump started it's weak and unprepared military to quickly enter WWII, Germany was spending big money on their military, also.
And what part do you not understand where Americans consistently matched up/out fought against the Germans? And that was while the Marines were busy defeating the all mighty Imperial Japan Army OP seems to think highly of, if the Marines were in Germany also, it would've been a wrap. Germans got whooped in WWI by the Marines, hence the nickname Devildogs.
OP if you're going to make up scenarios to justify your pathetic list, so shall I, you see, what happened, happened. The Allies won with America in the spotlight. Deal with it.

Roman army?
Too many variables to make a good list IMO, comparing today's army (with the gap in technology and training) and older ones that relied heavily on strategy and didn't have air support and stuff is hard.
Also definitely need to account the strength of these armies in their respective times*** Misc Cigar Crew ***

Germany was stretched too thin. A war on three fronts (Eastern, Western, and North Africa [debatable as a 3rd front]) was just too much.
If Germany had actually focused on one front and didn't dun goof by initiating Operation Barbarossa, the outcome of World War 2 could have very well been different.
Outcome of WW2 could very well be different if Rommel got what he wanted in North Africa so he could have taken Tobruk a lot earlier and actually capture El Alamein. From there he would have cut through Egypt and reached Iraq's oil, where he would gone north towards the Caucasus Mountains and be knocking on the USSR's foot.

lmao idiot learn some history, when U.S joined the war they didnt even send troops to Europe at first because they knew they would get destroyed. They joined the war Dec 1941 and D-Day was June 1944. And by then they were fighting a weakened German army who was already getting raped on the eastern front

The American's didn't outfight the Germans. The Germans had most of their army on the Eastern Front, and still beat the Americans in many battles. They were also fighting in Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and Northern Africa.
The Marines fighting the IJN have nothing to do with the war in Europe, Marines do not fight armies, Germany did not get beat by the US Navy in WW1.

The U.S. didn't enter the war early because Americans didn't ****ing want to, Roosevelt had to convince the populace, after Pearl Harbor they entered.
They were attacked at Pearl Harbor, by gasp... THE IMPERIAL JAPANESE. DURRRR why the **** would they have sent troops to Europe when JAPAN attacked them?

I'd say the crusader armies were up there.
Doesn't really count as a nations army but man did they butt heads. Large scale warfare with a heavy motivator slamming headlong into the largest defensive structures if all time and still coming away victorious.
For sheer battlefield effectiveness, size and professionalism you can't go past the Romans. It wasn't until rome was significantly weakened from within that anything could hold a candle to it. A fighting machine in every sense, if you beat them, they come back harder and with more men until you were wiped out.
Macedonians, mongols, I could go on and on.
America, no. What makes the leading armies of today so strong are superior air, naval and artillery support. You can't really add any modern army to this discussion unless your able to compare it in an all out conventional war where the full strength of both sides is in the fight.Last edited by Huberus; 03-31-2011 at 08:24 PM.

No army was capable of handling the Wermarcht in WWII. Pls ****ing go with these comparisons.
The West faced 1/3rd of the Germans and they still held them back even though they lost air control, while 2/3rds of their forces were brutally fighting on the Eastern Front with the only thing stopping them was the soulless winter of Russia.
However, this thread is absolutely stupid. How can you gauge the ability of an army under Alexander or Genghis Khan? Even Atilla? Do you know how many amazing armies there have been in the past?
Strong historical ignorance while bringing in the armies of today to round out the list.

ITT everybody mad as hell the US marines are the greatest ****ing military power to ever exist
aw yah u rDisregard Everything, Acquire Aesthetics Crew
Dear Frederick, thank you for your nice letter, but I am actually a US Marine who was born to kill, whereas clearly you seem to have mistaken me for some sort of wine sipping, communist dick suck. And although peace probably appeals to tree hugging bi-sexuals like you and your parents, I happen to be a death-dealing, blood-crazed warrior who wakes up every day just hoping for the chance to dismember my enemies and defile their civilizations.
