Greyhound rescue. Especially if you are living in an apartment. Greyhounds need very little space, however when taking out for runs, well obviously they are built for running.

Both German Shepherds and husky shed a lot.

    Beautiful hound!

Mixed dogs ftw, better behavior than any purebred.

Stop making excuses to try and make yourself feel better. Put in a little effort and find yourself a resuce

Its a well known fact that there are far less rescue dogs available for adoption in the northeast than anywhere else in the US. There is a fairly large market of people that make money transporting animals from the south to the northeast.

Have you considered a GS mix like the one posted previously?

Every single GS mix I have seen was so beloved by their owners for having the best temperaments and intelligence. They're usually intelligent like a shepherd, but more mellow like whatever it's mixed with but they're still huge and look bad ass, minus the health issues of a purebreed.

    Shep/rot, shep/lab, shep/husky etc.

Look on kijiji or your local buy/sell you can probably find a puppy for $100.

I have a husky who has gotten out before but she always comes right back.

Also, OP, I would only get a husky if you are planning on giving it at least an hour each day to run around in an open field somewhere. They were originally meant as a work breed and have an INSANE amount of energy and NEED to expend it running around every day. The same can be said for a lot of dogs, including German Shepards, for for husky's it is absolutely mandatory.

and, obligatory pics of my dag, who i love more than anyone:

get a german, from a good breeder as well.

german shepherds are good indoor and outdoor. you just have to exercize them regularly and train them the right way. it's not hard if you start from an early age. i've worked with a few germans, and they all responded well to my routine. they are just a powerful breed so they need a strong owner. usually if people have problems with germans it's because they are way too timid with the dog and/or they have no clue what they are doing. which ever you go with just make sure you do your home work and DON'T be one of those clueless owners who thinks all your dog needs is food/water and thinks screaming "NO!" at the top of your lungs 50 times is considered "disciplining" your dog. or i guarantee your dog will make you his bitch(no matter the breed).

    Also, regarding cost

There was an advertisement in the paper yesterday for a local shelter. They charged $50 for adopting a dog that needed to be fixed still and $5 for one that was already fixed. That included all the necessary vaccinations too.

I guess I got ripped off since I paid $75 for mine

my advice is to not buy a dog (especially a pup) until you are sure you will have plenty of time to stay at home. i'm not just saying this for the dog's sake, also for yours. if you want him trained properly to not shyt/piss in the house he needs to go out every couple of hours, and during the night you pretty much get no sleep for the first 2-4 weeks. it's complete hell. and if you come home from a long day the last thing you'll want to do is take care of a dog. this is also the most crucial period for training the dog and making sure he doesn't develop bad habits.

So I would hold off until summer ends since it seems like you won't be able to spend much time with him.

    german shepherd for sure!!

They're shown to be one of the smartest and capable dogs to train.

Siberian huskies not only shed like a mofo during part of the year, but they're basically wild animals. They're more likely to tear up your house when left alone too long (if not caged) and escape your backyard fences. Some will also jump up on strangers and basically hump them to prove their dominance.

i would def go with a german. huskies have too much energy to be left alone half of the day. GSD's can respond very well to crate training. just try to pick a dog with a calm disposition. this will help a lot if you are crate training. and starting young would also be a good idea. just keep in mind that you will have to get rid of the cabin fever every day after you get home so plan on at least an hour of exercise after being crated.

Yup. Every single opportunity. They always come back home though. Even if someone finds them and takes care of them for awhile, they usually escape and come back home. Really smart dogs, but require a lot of love and patience. And they push you to your limits when jogging. They drag you down the road, Haha
