Any tips on how I can do power snatches without access to rubber bumper plates? I would really like to incorporate them into my workouts. I already do power cleans, which are not a problem because I can just drop the weight onto my thighs.

use straps and bring it down to the thighs afterward same way you would with clean
don't work with maximum weight though and shouldn't be a problem with dropping itupdated 2011

Honestly I don't think it is worth it. If you are learning you are going to drop the weights fairly often. Even a cheap pair of 10 or 15kg bumpers would be worth buying and loading the sides with smaller metal plates as you learn. Worst case you trash your cheap/used pair of bumpers in a year. This will be a lot more beneficial than snatching 80lbs because you can't be dropping the wieghts accidentally.

you could do up to max also but it is harder
here is 2008 olympic champion doing it with near his max in clean and snatch
clean 225kg
snatch from blocks 210 kg he is using straps for the snatch since its a little more difficult to bring to thighs without straps from all the way overhead.
190kg snatch from floor
its not that hard to lower to thigh once you get the hang of it. I do oly workouts in commercial gyms from time to time and its never a big problem. I generally just don't try to push a new max singles though and work with weights I'm comfortable with.updated 2011

The OP isn't an olympic champion. Unless he is just amazing at learning he is going to drop the weights a lot in the catch as he learns. Even 100lbs out if front isn't recoverable. Your shoulders just aren't that strong.
Is it possible to lift without bumpers? Yes, I did it when I first started and trust me it wasn't worth it. The benefits of lifting heavy weights and having the freedom to fail is worth a cheap used set of 15kg bumpers. Max a $100 dollars spent and then you can train without a lot of compromise.

I wasn't saying that training with iron plates is ideal, just that it is possible.
here is the one of the most inexpensive bumpers around: http://www.roguefitness.com/new-hg-rogue-bumpers.phpMisc Strength Crew

I second what Slowman says. It is possible but for less than a $100 you get the benefits of being able to lift heavy and not worry about having to drop the weight back down or what will happen if you miss a lift. The wear you will save on your shoulders has to be worth $100. Even using an olympic bar vs a powerlifting bar saves your body from some wear but those don't come in $100 options.

WOW!!! thanks for that link, awesome deal never thought I'd find a cheap training plate/bumper plate.
just one question are they slightly bigger than york 45 (iron)... as in can I use 45s with those bumper or will the iron just hit the ground as hard as before....or do I basically have to load it up with anything of smaller diamater? either way thanks alot!! So happy they ship to Canada.

thanks you guys... also whats the diff between training plates and average bumper plates?
Never seen or touched either in person lol.. Will they cause alot of damage to the bar ( not a hardcore o-lifter so the weights will be lighter and less frequent) or is it nothing to really worry about for a few months?

not sure what you mean by "training plate" and "average bumper plate".
training bumper plates are just made using cheaper stuff and aren't calibrated to exact weights. Most gyms usually have training plates in lieu of competition plates (by most, I mean every gym I've been to).
and bumper plates should be the same diameter as a 45lb iron plate.Misc Strength Crew

Basically what slowman said. There is no diff between average bumper plate and training plate, they will be the same. There is only a diff between training plate and competition plate. You want training plates. You can get them in colored rubber or black. If you get black, you can color them yourself with colored electrical tape and wrap the edges of the plate to ID them. If you want colored plates, the cheapest are DHS plates from dynamic fitness. I think the 10 kg plates are like $89/pair.

ummm every1 else already posted usefull info. all i have to say is it is better to lift with weightlifting plates. i started off lifting with metal plates in a commercial gym. my best all time snatch and C&J are while using metal plates and i had to control it the whole time but i dont recommend it.
